Russia has amassed around 20,000 combat-ready troops on Ukraine's eastern border and could use the pretext of a humanitarian or peace-keeping mission to invade

that would be awful.  if Russia invaded Ukraine.

It's because the Ukrainians leave it in an easy place to find.

Somewhere in Europe, some General who spent his nard-drop years watching the downfall of the cold war just jizzed at reading this article.

Invade to keep peace between you and your redhead stepbrother? Is that like punching someone in the face to tactfully end an argument?

20,000 troops? One or two tactical nukes oughtta take care of that little invasion force.

What?

Do you know what the Ukraine is?  It's a sitting duck.  It's a road-apple.  The Ukraine is weak, it's feeble.  I think it's time to put the hurt on the Ukraine.

For the third time this year, with the ethically challenged western europeans in particular doing nothing.

Russia gets Ukraine and indirectly pushes the US towards another recession. Why wouldn't they do this after the harm we've done to them with our economic sanctions -- which rarely solve a geopolitical problem.

Sure, the attacker gets 3 dice and the defender only 2, but all the defender has to do is *match* the attacker's roll to win the round.

An unintended consequence of mandated frequent password changes that conform to strict length and content requirements (for example, eight characters, one upper case, one number, one special character) -- a malicious person who has physical access to an office can often find the passwords on a piece of paper under a keyboard or hidden nearby.  Password security policies go through fads, some are better than others...

Interestingly, some of the biggest anti-neo-nazi-right-wing-neo-fascists  recently dissapeared from Fark, and are obviously fighting in Ukraine as we speak. It would be very awkward if you went there and injured fellow farker

When bullies meet...

Sometime in the early/mid 2000s:

Bush:  Howdy ya like my little tap dance through Saddam's Iraq?

Putin:  Not too bad Boosh, not to shubby at all.  But, this decade yours, the next one mine... all mine.

So they put a division on the border?  Yaaaawn.  If you're going to invade a country you are going to need more than 1 division.  Heck we took 10+ divisions to Iraq in 2003 and they didn't have an army to speak of.

The Ukraine is weak.

/seriously, most defensive positions I saw there in May were manned by part-time militia

NATO is talking, but I don't see them actually providing any military support. Maybe Turkey will close the Bosporus.

I could see them providing intelligence support to Ukraine perhaps, maybe some surveillance drones.

The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves: Maybe Turkey will close the Bosporus.

There is one single issue Turkey care about: Crimean tatars. As long as Russia doesn't push Crimean tatars too far, it may crucify everyone else in Ukraine, as far as Turkey is concerned.

20k troops on the border, by Russian measures, is not even a fraking patrol, much less invasion force. They had a lot more on the border with Ukraine before.

Of course if Russia would decide to invade, well... Not much really can be done about it. In fact, losing that (small) part of Donets/Luhansk region would be extremely economically and politically beneficial to Ukraine (other than that whole "national pride" thing. That would hurt.) and getting it would be extremely painful for Russia, so I don't see Putin doing it at all.

They wouldn't be trying to storm the entire country if they got crazy, they would probably try something simple like "helping the freedom loving people of Donetsk"

Considering how many rebels in that area  are already basically accomplishing that goal how much more firepower would you suggest they need?

It's gonna take a lot more than a division. And then they can fight for the next 30 years.

20k might be a start but they are going to need a lot more to get the job done. They might be able help fortify the Eastern part of Ukraine with the help of the local population, but the couldn't stand a counter assault over such a wide area.

I suspect their goals are more modest now.  There was talk in the early months that Russia might try to push towards Odessa to reestablish the land bridge to Crimea, but I imagine any current move would focus on securing Donetsk and Luhansk.
