I'm not one to defend the militarization of police, I'm highly against it, but:

Officials responded to a home in Hancock Monday morning after receiving a report that the boy was stabbin his grandmother and attempting to stab his mother, WJLA reports

What should they have done?  They gave the kid one shot of pepper spray and he was done.  That actually seems like the safer thing to do in this situation than trying to have an adult tackle him and subdue him.  While the police overuse force quite often, this really doesn't seem like one of those times.  At least they didn't shoot him, which, if this kid was actually coming at them with the knife, they probably could have gotten away with.

Props to the kid for dual-wielding, but I think it was totally fine for the cops to mace the little turd. Sorry that you're so scared, but the kid knifed his grandma and was charging at the cops. Precious Snowflake was lucky that a face full of capsaicin was all he got.

(Also, are we sure it was a kid and not a Chucky doll?)

Awww come here poor misunderstood child that is stabbing his grandmother.  Here have a lolly.

Ow!

He's stabbing me chief!  We better pull out the big guns, call in a SWAT team, and have them offer him complimentary tickets to Disneyland.

This wasn't excessive force.

Kid was going totally ninja with a couple of butcher knives on grandma and then charged the cops. What else should they have done? I don't like seeing six-year-olds get pepper sprayed, but I like six-year-olds getting tased, batoned, beaten by an adult or shot even less. Assuming they showed appropriate restraint and tried to overpower him with strength and get the knives from him with brute force, the cops and the kid could have been seriously injured. Hopefully the little bastard learned his lesson.

Well, maybe.

Yeah, I'm usually pretty anti-cop, but pepper spraying someone who just stabbed their grandmother and is waving two butcher knives around seems both appropriate and surprisingly restrained.

Also, apparently he wasn't very effective:
Officers said the boy had stabbed his grandmother in the hand... the grandmother refused medical treatment for a wound to her hand, the release said.

They would only shoot him if he was crossing the border. Can he be deported and replace him with a better behaved immigrant child who would be happy with a better quality life?

I'm guessing punishment is not a big thing in that household.  Every kid needs to be spanked once in a while.

Why did the cops need to get involved in the first place? Any grandmother who can't take down a six-year-old, regardless of how well-armed, should just turn in her grandmother card. Oh, boohoo, the 4-foot-tall, 60-pound beast nicked your hand with a butcher knife. Granny up and beat his ass!

Unless there was another six year old you could pick up and use as a baseball bat? Yeah. I'm pretty okay with it.*

*Provided the child immediately receives medical attention and a dousing of no-tears shampoo.

I'll side with the cops on this one, any physical contact with the kid to disarm him risks the kid being injured as well as the officer, and I think pepper spray is an appropriate level of force to counter  a butcher knife.

I've been father to 2 six year old boys, The first one was all pale thin and willowy, the second one felt like he was cast out of lead, quite the bruiser. Could he have killed me with a butcher knife? No.  Could he have given me a 15 stich wound? probably.  Could I have wrestled a knife out of his hand with 100% certainty that neither he nor I would be injured in the process?  Probably not.

I agree. It seems like an appropriate use of force, although I suspect the situation was exaggerated somewhat. He was "stabbing his grandmother" yet she only had a minor wound to the hand. The kid clearly sucks at hand-to-hand combat. I have doubts that he charged the police. It probably would have no risk to have a trained officer disarm him. But, if the situation was as described, it was an acceptable solution.

As a side note, Headso, have you ever worked with a severely autistic child or a child with major anger control issues?

Kids like this one scare the shiat out of me. And I work with them.

I'm just curious if you've ever had to wrestle one down in the midst of a psychotic break, let alone one with a weapon. Or if you feel beating them with a long object until they go unconscious is a viable alternative to getting stabbed?

You know, considering that the scene was supposed to be ad-libbed, everyone played along really well with it.  As to the kid, it is much more fun to imagine him getting tazered.  Spray was right here.

Of course the bootlickers think the cops did the right thing instead of being men who aren't chickenshiat cowards.  No kid with a knife is going to be able to get past a baton used to push the blade away before you grab the little shiat.  But that's what we get for letting dumbass city slickers have access to authority.

Yeah. The cops should have just done a spinning reverse crescent kick and knocked the knife from the kid's hand and he would have been all like "Wow! That was cool Officer Ninja. I have learned the error of my ways. I promise to be good from now on and stay in school." Then the cop would smile and wink at the camera and give a thumbs up.

Pepper spray is just a very memorable spanking. In this situation (especially since blood was already drawn. Who would want to get even scratched with a knife that was just used on someone else?) would you risk a lifetime pathogen/illness to save the little bastard 30 minutes of harmless pain? Proper use of force IMO. People can't expect a stranger (even if they're in uniform) to take that kind of risk.

And a corny theme song to reiterate the lesson of today's ABC afternoon special?

If the cops hands are busy with two batons (because the kid had two knives) who is gonna jump into the middle of a baton and knife fight to grab the kid? What's to stop the kid from turning around and stabbing another person while the first cop is busy swordfighting with the kid?

People watch too much tv nowadays
