Maybe he should just move to Bolivia if he doesn't like it.

If it were Trump making this argument (and I hate that fark, but the dick helps me make my point) Redford would be at the head of the line protesting the 1% screwing the po folk.

Except he already paid the taxes in his state of residence, Utah.   Different po folk got their share.  But it's not screwing anyone.

Probably take 4 years to get a ruling.

Since when did logic apply to hypocrites?

And you do know that that's the argument made by companies that have overseas operations, right? They pay taxes over there so they shouldn't pay in the US.

How far does that argument go on the left and what would Redford's position be on that if asked in an interview?

Well that's great he's successful and God bless and keep a big hunk of that sale for yourself, but please give a share to the little people who also deserve it.  I mean, you didn't build this yourself.

State says "You owe us taxes," Redford says "Nuh uh," they go to court and the court weighs the merits of both sides' arguments and issues its judgment based on its understanding of the applicable laws. Sounds like everything is proceeding exactly the way it should.

Even liberals hate excessive taxation when it applies to them.

2014-08-06 12:20:08 PM
Sounds more like Redford needs to have a good chat with his accountant and lawyer (from the article, looks like they might have screwed up and the wrong state got the tax $).

Except he lives in Utah and fully paid his taxes on it...in Utah.  False equivalency and intellectual dishonesty makes American companies hiding their profits overseas to avoid American taxes exactly the same thing though.

No, the difference would be that Trump would be on his soapbox looking to garner interest in a potential run for the Presidency, his new book, his new show and his new "resort" under the guise about how the government is broken, can't work, won't ever work and how since he gets things done why not him?

Redford largely wouldn't give a shiat.

Redford's not grandstanding.  He's essentially doing what is necessary for what he believes to be a financial oversight.  It's the millionaires version of what we do when we go out to dinner and have a beer and they charge us for two of them.

That's a whole lot of not reading the article right there.

NYS is pretty douchy when it comes to stealing money.  They mailed my small (3 person) company a bill for Disability (or something like that).  It was for like $15.  It didn't get delivered (USPS fark up).  So, they of course do the rational thing, and fine us $20,000 and send it to collections.

We talked them down to something like $2k finally.  They can DIAF as far as I'm concerned.

NY has this little law where they tax people that work or make money in their state.  They go after people even if they don't live in NY

"We're going to construct an office for him, right near mine," said Josh Sapan, president and chief executive of Rainbow Media, the Cablevision unit that will operate Sundance. "I don't think he's done yet."
Mr. Redford, sounding very much engaged, said he was "interested in new technology" but "ultimately interested in whether we're providing stories well told."
Sitting alongside Mr. Redford at Sundance's soon-to-be-former offices at Broadway and 50th Street (it is moving to Rainbow's, at 11 Penn Plaza), Mr. Sapan said he had no plans to upend the programming lineup of the channel, which Mr. Redford founded in 1996 as an offshoot of his film festival in Park City, Utah. It reaches about 30 million homes.

The network was (and still is) headquartered in NY, he had an office and worked in NY, both before and after the sale.  It's an NY based company with NY based principals, property and employees.  Pay your fair share asshole.

That's not what's happening here at all.  He had to file a NY return, for whatever reason.  You have to report all income, regardless of where it's earned.  You get credit against your NY income tax for income that was NOT earned in NY.  He sold part of the Sundance Channel.  NY said that was NY income.  He said it was UT income, and reported it in his UT return (and paid the tax).

FTA:

Redford claims that his take from the sale "was included in the income tax return Plaintiff filed with his home state of Utah and was fully taxed by that State.  However, the suit goes on to say, New York's tax department treated the money as New York source income - a decision that Redford obviously disagrees with.   "[Redford's Sundance T.V. Inc] and Plaintiff determined that the gain was non-New York source income and reported it as such [on] their New York State tax returns," the lawsuit reads.

"Plaintiff did not use his ownership interest in [Sundance T.V. Inc.], nor did he use his indirect ownership interest in Limited or Channel, in any trade or business carried on by him in New York," the suit reads. "Further, Plaintiff did not have any property, payroll or receipts located in or deemed attributable to the conduct of a trade or business in New York."

agreed except the tax laws shouldn't be so confusing that one has to "sue" to do what is right.

Sure, but that's hardly unique to this situation. Presumably the complexity of the tax code is precisely why Redford hired professional accountants and tax lawyers in the first place.

You don't see any difference between keeping your money in another state and keeping your money on another continent?
