No need for any gang dodging, just take exit 454 on I-80 and it's like a block south on 13th street.  Not even a bad neighborhood.

Highly recommended.

My wife and I will have to check it out if we go through there again.  I'm really surprised it beat out San Diego.  That zoo is amazing.

Henry Doorly Zoo is amazing.  I haven't lived in Omaha for almost fifteen years, and I will only plan to go back to show my husband the zoo.

/And Don and Millie's.... GODS I miss that place.

Pretty much this.

As someone who lives in Omaha and has been to the zoo a countless number of times, I really don't see why it gets so much recognition.  Is it nice?  Yes.  But is it the best in the world?  Doubt it.  Maybe I am just numb from going there so often.

I've been to the DC zoo and would consider it quite nice. I will definitely have to make an effort to get to some of these others that rank so highly. Zoos are cool.

/The Baltimore zoo has nostalgia for me, and is one of the oldest in the US, but is pretty ugly.

We're just spoiled.  I heard the zoo in Denver was supposed to be a sort-of big deal, but compared to Omaha it may as well have been an animal shelter.

When you live in a place like Omaha (aka the middle of farking nowhere) everything is the "best in the world".   Especially if it makes you forget the hell in which you live for an hour or two.

Then again, compared to Chicago lately, north Omaha is pretty nice.

I went with the sampler and all were excellent.
That zoo takes two days, and I was okay, as that turned into two visits to Upstream in the weekend.

Having lived in places like Chicago, Atlanta and St. Louis in the past, I like living in Omaha.  The zoo really is excellent, and there is a drive through animal park South and West of town (along with the Strategic Air Command Museum).  You won't run into any gang infested streets unless you are really lost, or really stupid.  Most of the problems are contained within pretty defined areas, and most of the shootings there are at night.  Hey, if you are at 42nd and Ames at 2:00 am, you were probably asking to get shot.  You would also be a long way from the zoo.

ps - I have been to the St. Louis zoo.  The problem with "free" zoos is that you can't tell if the exhibits are in the cages or walking around you.

Omaha has some great restaurants, the College World Series, and a great zoo.

It's worth a visit IF you are in the region. Not exactly a destination though...

Although if you are a baseball nerd it probably is a destination.

Kansas City (where I live), not only has a crappy zoo that you have to walk 3 miles to see anything.  But you can also get shot by gang bangers!
