Fascinating.

However, in what world is a 40-item measure "cumbersome"? The NEO PI-3 has something around 250 items, and the MMPI-2 has over 500. I've used the Narcissistic Personality Inventory in my work, and it's really not difficult getting people to complete it.

Also, I doubt anybody is going to advocate that we drop the NPI. Narcissism is not an on-off switch in the brain. There are levels, ranging from "Tiny Bit Too Self-Focused" to "Pope Ego the First of the Church of Self-Worship", and it's no good treating them as undifferentiated members of the same category. It would be like taking the range of IQ scores and declaring everyone with an IQ of 100 or higher as "smart people", and 99 or lower as "dummy-heads", as if it made no difference whether someone's IQ was 105 or 150.

Anybody that takes a selfie  right when they sit down.  They can't function without immediately having everybody knowing what they are getting involved in.  That's all the narcissist millennial chad and trixies do at Cubs games.  They show up in the second or third inning, take 5 pictures of themselves and the field, talk about drama on facebook and leave before the 7th to go to some bar.

It probably explains why so many children and animals die in hot cars.  To leave a child in the car for hours and hours can only point to self absorption by the person who drove.  I have never understood how can someone forget a child, a living,  breathing person.  The article also notes that  narcissism is on the rise.  I see it all over  the place.

Do they have a test like that for modesty? I would like to have a score so I can show people how modest I am even though I am so awesome in every way.

Ha!
I am not going to say this is BS, however, I had a relationship with a girl over a few years.  Our place had mirrors on every. single. wall.  And each time she walked past one, she'd be looking into it.  Same with shop windows, checking her reflection.
She was NEVER wrong. Evar.
And if you were playing a card-game or board-game with her, you played by her modified rules ot you didn't play.
But called her a narcissist? Denial and out-right indignation, and you slept on the couch for weeks after.

It's best to avoid them when possible, but when neccessary most narcissists are easy to manipulate once you figure out which buttons to push.

LoneWolf343: I knew a guy who was diagnosed as a borderline narcissist, and all that it means is that "He knows things better than other people."

That's not at all what it means, and was he "diagnosed" (by a qualified mental health professional) as a "narcissistic personality disorder" or as a "borderline/narcissistic personality disorder?" Or did somebody just tell him that he was "pretty narcissistic" or something? Because none of those things are the least bit alike.

You know, for all the scorn you all reap on the mental health profession, while simultaneously whining for it to take all the loonies off the streets so you can have all the guns you can carry, you could at least stop throwing around bullshiat terms and then acting like it's the mental health profession's fault that you don't know what they mean or what they signify.

I don't go around claiming that global warming is bullshiat because I can't understand climate science math. If I wanted to claim that it was bullshiat, I'd have to learn the science first.

/We used to call narcissism "vanity." You can gussy it up and give it a fancy new name, but there's nothing new under the sun.

This can be determined by your self worth,  and by that I mean how much money you are worth and have in the bank.  If you're just another poor then you're not.

Oh, I'm poor. But I'm not just another poor. I have so much talent and good looks and other forms of awesomeness, my poverty can only be the result of a vast conspiracy against me, probably by a bunch of jealous people.

Back when I played team trivia, our team was called THE MOST HUMBLE PEOPLE ON EARTH.

To give credit, though, that was stolen from James "Kibo" Parry, who declared himself the most humble man on Earth in an interview recorded for a 1990s guide to using the "Information Superhighway."

It's come up in Fark threads before.  "Trixie" as slang has a different meaning (or meanings) in other parts of the USA, or had in the 1990s, anyway.  When I heard it used, it was women in their 20s calling each other "Trixie" affectionately.  None of them were from Chicago.

Rational self-interest might be a workable principle to organize a society around.  But people are not especially rational and very often the most selfish people are short-sighted and unaware of the far-reaching effects of their behavior.  (And very often wouldn't care if they did understand them all.)

It may be something as tangible as the  anterior insular cortex, the "empathy center" of the brain.  I strongly suspect that a lot of people are thoughtless in the literal sense that they are less CAPABLE of thinking about others.

Had a narcistic freind who knew and admitted he was. He often joked that if he was super villian has weakness would be mirrors he would just stop and stare. It was quite amusing when we played badmington together. He would always book the court next to the mirrored wall and i would often have to get his attention between serves as he would be staring at himself.

That might not be narcissism, actually. Well, yeah, in the sense that the word comes from a man who drowned trying to make out with his own reflection, but it could be that he was really fascinated by mirrors themselves.
