Rowling also included a wand, an acceptance letter to Hogwarts with a school supply list and a signed copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the book Cassidy quoted from at the memorial service.

Good on ya, JK. Well done.

Yeah. That seemed like the kind of thing she might send the nerdy boy who writes her a letter because he can't get a prom date. Not even a phone call?

Quoting Harry Potter? Not the choice I would've made.

"In The Prisoner of Azkaban, Dumbledore says, 'Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light,'" "In The Dark Knight, Batman says 'You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain," she said in the ceremony, held in mid-July outside a school three of her younger brothers and sisters had attended.

Well, my belief that some farkers are really clueless has been reinforced.

Here's the the people you just made a jest about.

Stephen, 39, mother Katie, 34, and her siblings - Bryan, 13; Emily, 9; Rebecca, 7; and Zach, 4.

The uncle was searching for his ex.  When the family refused, he shot them in the head. She was only grazed, and pretended to be dead.

Once her uncle had left, she called 911 and told the cops who the shooter and were he was going (To her aunts parents place)

That girl showed a hell of lot more courage in real life than you will ever have, mr. anonymous internet poster.

Feeling delicate today?

Look at the list of crap:
 a wand
an acceptance letter to Hogwarts
a school supply list
and a signed copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the book Cassidy quoted from at the memorial service

The book and the note are nice. Rowling should have left the rest off. This isn't Christmas.

I'm not saying she should have done more. I'm saying she should have done less. Either way, it was a nice gesture.

Wolf892: Why? if she's going to bother "reaching out" as she did, why do it in such a pandering and lame way. Why not do something especially meaningful for a fan? Why send the stupid swag gift basket that all the little fans get when they write her? She's rich, she has time on her hands, and she did reach out, which means she literally did the least amount of work possible in trying to connect with this girl.

I'm not asking her to give the girl a million dollars, or re write the ending of the Potter series so Harry ends up marrying her, just maybe a phone call, or something special like one of her first rough drafts of the book the girl quoted with all the editor notes and what not so the girl could have a genuine piece of literature history.

I have a hard time criticizing her.  If you want her to do more, like I said, give that Facebook group a "Like."

Of all the books I would look to for comfort "Harry Potter" would not even be on the list. This girl will need a lot of help for a long time to come. The care package was nice for she did not have to do anything, but I think if I had been in her place I would have done something else. The problem is once you do something wonderful for one person, how many others will come out of the wood work looking for a hand out.

Largely this.

And the other thing no one seems to want to acknowledge is how do we know that she's done giving?

Right now this poor girl is just coming to grips with how her life is going to work, how things are going to go, how she's going to handle school, friends, life and the day-to-day things.  She's trying to figure out what "normal" is.  The last thing she needs is someone in the middle acting like a Fairy Godmother to disrupt and bring media attention and disruptions just because they're famous and want to do something nice.
