The tobacco industry paid for much of the early genetic research. James Watson and Francis Crick were using funds that were intended to research ways to wipe out a disease that killed tobacco plants when they found their DNA invention. The gene splicing of mushroom DNA into tobacco was also a first as was the using mushrooms to strengthen the nicotine compounds.
