All he has to do is keep wresting bears without his shirt on and he'll be fine.

Well, he certainly seems to be doing it rather effectively, whatever it is.  He's got the US State Department flummoxed, that's for sure.

I'm not sure that not having a Gantt chart and a Strategic Plan document means he doesn't know what his objective is.  As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure he knows his objective.  And so does everyone else.

Don't worry about it. Once all this FIFA money rolls in, he'll have it made again. Just like those rich bastards in Brazil.

He's loaned the Ukrainians a lot of money in recent years. All he wants is to be repaid, and maybe get to keep the warm water port. He doesn't really want to take over, that didn't turn out too well last time. Ultimately, you're looking at mob-boss logic. "If I kill them, they can't repay me. If they won't repay me, I could kill them to make sure others repay me, but then no one takes my loans.  If I harass them, my boys get to act all tough and I get repaid and others think they'll make their payments on the loans they come to me for."

I'm sure GWB flummoxed a lot of intelligence officers in other countries as well. . .

If Putin decides to outright invade Ukraine, starting a full fledged war, Europe would immediately lose half their gas or more.  Russia would lose all the revenue as well.  I sincerely doubt that Ukraine would allow Russian gas to flow through their country if the two countries were in a state of war.

That's what I don't understand. Putin has already got everything that he really set out to get, so what is he continuing to supply the 'Rebels' for? And why is he only supplying them at a rate that is allowing them to be pushed back and are now are just about to be cut-off.

If you look at the area that the Ukrainian forces now control which is at the bottom of this article basically all the roads are are leading to the cities under rebel control either have been or are just about to be cut-off by the government forces.

He's either going to have to massively increase support for the rebels (e.g. launching an invasion with proper Russian troops) or watch them get taken apart over the next week.

I keep thinking that at some point, the Right is going to snap out of it a realize that all the ammo they are expending on Lame Duck Obama is wasted.
But the mindless hatespew continues to gush from Fox News et all like a broken sewer.
I honestly don't know what their strategy is, let alone Putin's.

How much does he want Eastern Ukraine?  If he is just supplying the rebels as a way to poke the stick at Ukraine, then it makes sense that his support may not be full fledged.

"Winging It: Putin Has No Master Plan for Ukraine Crisis, Officials Say" - you think?!! Of course he has no "master plan"! The guy is an opportunist, not some kind of great strategist. It was blindingly obvious from the start.

Danack: That's what I don't understand. Putin has already got everything that he really set out to get, so what is he continuing to supply the 'Rebels' for?

To increase the chaos and internal struggle in Ukraine benefits, in his opinion, Russia short term and long term.

Danack: And why is he only supplying them at a rate that is allowing them to be pushed back and are now are just about to be cut-off.

He most certainly doesn't want them to win. He wants the region, destroyed by the war and with population utterly separated over whole kaboom to remain Ukraine's problem.

Danack: He's either going to have to massively increase support for the rebels (e.g. launching an invasion with proper Russian troops) or watch them get taken apart over the next week.

He'll watch them get taken apart. Russian propaganda currently doesn't try to push support for actual invasion.

I wouldn't, however, count on the war finished in the next month or so. Donetsk and Luhansk (2 main cities) are too large for separatists to control, they never had a chance and they'll lose them quite soon, in the next month for sure. Smaller cities, however, 30k to 100k people, closer to the border with Russia will likely prove to be a harder nut to crack. It is likely that the war will continue well into the autumn.

So, just like the Iraq War?

Putin wants to restore what he sees as Russia's prestige in the world. But since making Russia better is hard, he's happy to just tear down the competition.

His plan is the same as Netanyahu's. Pull some dick moves, give the US the finger, then sit back and relax as the media tears into Obama and makes way for a more favorable regime. In Bibi's case, it's one that won't question the IDF. In Putin's, it's one that will shoot off its other foot with more tax cuts and military adventurism.

Maybe the inclusion of the Baltic sttes and Poland got us here and the Holy Russian Empire will fight for Ukraine an Belarus. Then set there sights on Istanbul that England denied them in the 1890's

Considering the rapport those two seemed to have, that's a pretty good assessment.

Plus maybe he wants Ukraine to disarm the pro-Russian rebels for him like Russia left the Polish Resistance hung out to dry in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.after urging them to fight the Nazi's promising support.  In reality Stalin was having his enemies take each other out since the Polish Resistance was pro-west.  Maybe Putin wants these Russian good old boy militias disarmed but it would not be supported politically.  Since he wants to stick it to Ukraine and the west too, he figured he would kill two birds with one stone.

2014-08-06 03:39:51 AM
I thought his master plan was to launch an annexation of the Crimea while the Special Olympics were still going on and then support "Pro-Russian rebels" in Eastern Ukraine with weapons and strikes allowing him to consolidate those gains. Bringing a commercial airliner down drags the process out even more.

He's banking on being able to get away with it because Europe needs Russia's gas to some extent and because Ukraine has been Russia's biatch for a very long time now.

He figures the west will quietly back down after a time and leave Ukraine to their own devices.

I hope he's wrong about that.

For how long can you be vigilant?

No matter what, 20 years later the USA would forget the name "Ukraine". But Russia still will be there. Right on the border.
