(Deadspin)   "This is a Japanese sport called Bo-Taoshi. Remember that game you played in grade school where a kid would stand on top of a mound of snow or dirt and everyone else would try to push him off? It's basically that, except with more flying jump kicks"   (deadspin.com) divider line 36

Bo-Toashi translates loosely to "getting on the subway during rush hour" in Japanese.

actually this looks more like what Bill Cosby described as 'Buck Buck' in his Fat Albert story...

Bill Cosby's 1967 album Revenge includes a track "Buck, Buck" in which he describes playing the game as a child. He mentions that in his hometown of Philadelphia it was called "Buck Buck," while in New York City it was known as "Johnny on the Pony." This track introduces Fat Albert, "the baddest Buck Buck breaker in the world," who "weighed 2,000 pounds" and could cause earthquakes when he ran down the street.

Ah, Japanese culture, once again making something childishly simple into a overstuffed production with ridiculous amounts of attention to detail and motheaten, incomprehensible ritual, crossed with an unsubtle reminder that society is a combination of ruthless group participation and conformity and male violence against individuals that stand out.

No wonder the Japanese get along with USians so well, there's just a native similarity there that runs very, very deep.

No, no child of this generation knows of such things because if they tried it everyone would go to counseling for aggressive behavior, bullying, and general butthurt at King of the Mountain not being being determined by a fair lottery taking into how account how disadvantaged they are. The King of the Mountain himself would be frog marched to juvie for such disruptive behavior and Nancy Grace would take about it for months.

I always thought he was describing something more akin to Red Rover - where two opposing lines of players are linked hand-to-hand, the chain calls out a member of the other side to break the chain.
- Break the chain and you capture the 2 players who you broke through
- Fail to break thru and you are assimilated into that chain

/Bill's Himself and a Best of (with Buck Buck, story and Noah (ping) ) were my childhood intro to stand up comedy
//it got better...

Ah, King Of The Mountain. The game that made mom's coin the phrase "it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt."

The crybaby would go home and we'd play smear the gender-agnostic. Or full contact football. Or play in the woods.

The only reason you went home was to eat or it was dark.

/glad I didn't grow up in a subdivision

But once it's dark you can play manhunt!

ah, yes...

we would play king of the mountain if someone forgot to bring a ball or some type of sporting equipment.  the only rule was you couldnt intentionally kick or punch somebody in the balls; the instatement of which, interestingly enough, was not instituted because we would just run around kicking ourselves in the balls, but because the tomboys that had hit puberty already could beat the living hell out of all of us at once.

it was a simpler time back then...

a simpler time.....
