So, they incorporated some Pinto components?

That's too bad.  They recently did a test of how fast it would run, and it was first on race day.

Ah good, they can park it next to the burned Tesla

"the 2017 F-Series Super Duty, which was ironically towing a trailer with a water tank mounted to it"

All the hipsters are going to want this truck when they find out about its ironic towing capacity.

There are very few high performance prototypes that dont eventually catch fire.

It's the car that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs.

Fix it again, Tony!

I still can't believe people are on about the aluminum in the truck. This is even dumber than the people who were all pissy about the proposed EcoBoost V-6 for the Mustang GT because they were worried it wouldn't "sound like a Mustang".

I'm fairly certain that this fire is a death knell not only for Ford but for the diesel, HD pickup industry in general.  Right, internet?

Not an isolated incident, per my father in law's face book from July 22 North of Phoenix AZ

"Beware of buying a new Ford pickup truck in the next few years!

REDACTED were coming up the Yarnell Grade around 4:00 this afternoon when we were slowed by a lane closure caused by a vehicle fire. There was a caravan of four Ford pickup trucks, all towing trailers, going up the grade. One of them burned down to the ground. Literally, the tallest item left visible on the truck was one of the wheels.

Normally when a vehicle burns the steel structure remains, albeit badly distorted. On this truck - nothing! I knew it was a prototype because all four trucks were fitted with some kind of camouflage in the form of black cloth that was padded with blocks of foam. On the driver's door, stenciled in white letters, it said "Ford Motor Company." They looked like something out of "Mad Max - Road Warrior."

Could Ford be tinkering with the idea of a plastic truck? They'd better get some advice from Fisher Price...

Sorry I didn't get pictures, but the situation wouldn't allow for it. "

Yeah you are right...I bet he saw this report then asked Obama to take him back in the magic time machine to make a post that sounds like the exact same thing happened to a Ford prototype in Arizona close to the same time as the incident in Death Valley CA because REASONS!. All I was doing was pointing out that there are other eye witnesses and that the Death Valley incident is not the only one.....but hey you added something neither smart nor funny to the conversation. I guess I better pull the hook out huh.

And you copypasta'd a bunch of badly-written garbage from an old man's Facebook page.  Then you get all butthurt and respond with more barely-readable screeds when someone points out that your "source" (which you don't even have a link to, by the way) isn't legitimate.  Welcome to Fark.  It's not my job to teach you how to write coherently and include credible sources to back up your claims.

If that was real, I'd watch the hell out of that movie.

The new F-150 comes with a heated truck body. So you have something to warm your hands when you are pushing your Ford down the highway during those long Canadian winters.

At least Ford is sticking with tradition with an under hood fire.  GM vehicles usually fall apart due to fasteners not torqued to specifications and Chryslers always suffer electrical gremlins.

Test mules catch fire. That's what they're for. If nothing untoward happens to any of your mules, you overengineered the vehicle or didn't test hard enough.

This applies double to big pickup trucks. These days they're basically high strung thoroughbreds dancing on the edge of a knife because customers demand insane performance figures and the government demands economy exactly at odds with that.

I'll keep my 12 year old Cummins Ram, thanks. What's a catalytic converter?

Narrator: A new car built by my company leaves somewhere traveling at 60 mph. The rear differential locks up. The car crashes and burns with everyone trapped inside. Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A, multiply by the probable rate of failure, B, multiply by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A times B times C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one.

Business woman on plane: Are there a lot of these kinds of accidents?

Narrator: You wouldn't believe.

Business woman on plane: Which car company do you work for?

Narrator: A major one.

Hell, Honda/Acura torched a new NSX at the Nurburgring just a few days before this.

Test mules are not production vehicles. You try stuff out. Sometimes it breaks... catastrophically.

Amateurs.  Go all in like Volkswagen did with the Thing.  Light magnesium body panels for fuel economy that double as a safety/find me flare if there's a vehicle fire.

The only magnesium in a VW Thing was the engine case.  The body was stamped steel components.

What the hell is an engine case?

/rebuilt thing engine in 89, ruptured gas line ended it in a ball of flames a year later, do not remember any burning magnesium.
