(CNN)   Scrabble adds 5,000 new words to its dictionary, including 'selfie' and 'hashtag'. You're still pretty well screwed if you need to use a Q or an X, though   (money.cnn.com) divider line 39

It's a bit quixotic to hope to use q and x, don't you think?

Q and X are easy to use if you get them early enough, X is usually cake, at any time. It's those damn superfluous C's and V's. I miss my grandparents, if they were still around we'd not use the the new dictionary.

Subby, I'm sorry someone dropped multiple bingos on you.

Words with "Q" and without "U":

I'm fine with Q and X; it's C and V that I loathe. No two-letter C or V words :(

The scrabble dictionary is already full of bullshiat non-word words.

The more intense Scrabble players out there don't care about vocabulary, which requires you to also assign meaning and usefulness to a word.

If you've never used a word in a conversation that wasn't about Scrabble, then that word isn't part of your vocabulary, it's a bit of trivia.

Our scrabble (and Words with Friends) word rule is use it in a normal sentence.  And "qadi is a good scrabble word" doesnt count.

Use all the words or GTFO.

Try playing against computer opponents! They whip out words like Qi, Xi, etc. that NOBODY uses in English speech, and you can't do anything about it. They get the points, you get boned. (One is one of several spellings of "Chi", the other is the 14th letter of the Greek alphabet, and apparently both are legal in Scrabble).

Scrabble is a game, and the words in the scrabble dictionary are to make it a good game, not a good introduction to the English language. They're just arbitrary rules, like intentional grounding in football or pawns capturing diagonally.

I certainly hope so.  I'd like to see 'ew' as well.

/qwerty is another good 'q' word that doesn't need a 'u'.

No proper nouns in Scrabble.

As long as 'quincunx' is still accepted, I think I'm good.

Actually, I heard this one on the way in to work this morning.  They added a word that was the original root for 'kayak' - 'QAJAQ'.  So, two 'Q's, no 'U's.

Zen is a proper noun/adjective and is always capitalized, so it will never be in the Scrabble dictionary for the same reasons that Mahayana and Vajrayana (and other major schools of Buddhism) will not be in the Scrabble dictionary.

I used to have a bunch of the Q without U words memorized when I played Scrabble regularly.  No better way to seriously piss off your opponent, especially when they lose their turn after challenging the world.

I beat somebody in the last turn of a game using QI once. He challenged it, demanding I tell him what it means (My stance was, "You're so certain it's not a word, I'd rather you learn this way that it is a word."), and the dictionary defined it as "that which cannot be explained." Oh, he was fuming at that one.

Yes, I am rather lonely. Why do you ask?
