2014-08-05 08:09:47 AM
Ukraine says the troops were forced (most likely unintentionally) towards the border by fighting with rebels where they were then captured by Russia. Russia says that these soldiers arrived at the border demanding asylum from Kiev's Neo-Nazi regime that is forcing them to fight the pro-Russian freedom fighters across the border.

Get the popcorn ready, because I'm not sure how you do negotiations for people that one party says is in the other country against their will and the other party says that returning them will be against their will.

Come on, people, this wasn't the first time by the long shot! At least once before 16 (if I remember correctly) Ukrainian soldiers crossed the border to Russia (immediately surrendering, with all the white flags and shiat) trying to escape being cut off and killed by separatists. They were returned back to Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities put them under arrest as deserters, threatening up to 15 years of prison for "desertion", but Ukrainian judge put them under house arrest - it is unlikely they'll actually be in any danger of prison time.

That story with 438 soldiers crossing the border to Russia (seeking asylum from separatists) is widely discussed in Ukrainian media, with interviews with soldiers themselves, etc. Mostly the soldiers say "being cut off for weeks", "having no water or ammunition", "being promised every day that the help is coming, but having no actual help" left them no choice but to cross into Russia and surrender.

It's not some kind of sinister thing, either, you know. Soldiers are mostly conscripts, neither Russians see them as enemy nor they see Russia as some kind of monsters. Hell, I be two thirds of Ukrainian troops are ethnically Russians or half-Russians themselves, and the rest can easily pass as Russians.

There is nothing wrong with that. Well, not much wrong with it. Even Russian propaganda is not making a big huge thing out of it.

"Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking to Itar-Tass and Rossiya24 TV, said Russia would facilitate the return of the Ukrainian soldiers but suggested they would be vulnerable to prosecution for desertion once they returned home."

For once, Lavrov isn't lying. Ukrainian soldiers who crossed the Russian border before, seeking asylum from separatists fire, were prosecuted (although not convicted of anything, yet!) upon return.

That's just the reality of this war.

Hey, I have an idea!

Talk with the people themselves? They are available for journalists, they have phones and can be called, they gave interviews to Ukrainian press... Hell, 150 of them have already returned to Ukraine (although they apparently were attacked by separatists when they've crossed the border back). So goddamn ask them!

2014-08-05 08:22:53 AM

Ned Stark: Its easy. One of these groups is obviously lying. Which one? Well, that depends on your preferences.

Well may be, just _may be_, among those 438 soldiers some had different motivations than others? Some were forced by separatists fire. Officers may be tried to save their people, many of whom are probably conscripts, but are ready to return and continue fighting themselves. Some of the conscripts genuinely don't want to go back to fighting, because conscription does wonders for morale. So may be it's not as simple?

Actually, I'm for a few drone strikes on any heavy equipment the separatis might have. They've already shot one airliner out of the sky. We know we can't trust them not to view all these advanced weapons as a great Nintendo game.

Then again, Russia would just use it as an excuse to provide 'more' (seriously Vlad, quit pretending, you're giving these guys all the hardware they need to keep Ukraine off balance) support for the Russians (er Separatist Ukranians) in that part of the country seeking to create a buffer and scare the shiat out of any country tempted to side with the EU over Russia economically.

Arkanaut: Langston: Cross into Russia...to avoid fighting?!

A.k.a. "deserting"

Well, yes, technically. I mean, does it counts as deserting if you are in real danger of being killed? Okay, technically that's what war is about, but you can't really expect conscripts to fight to the death for something they don't care about. Well, technically you can, and you can put them to prison for decades for desertion, but it's hardly a good PR move.

FeatheredSun: I don't know all the details; seems some of them may just want asylum for a rest...they're done fighting. It happens.

I DO know that subby is a retard.

Well, if Ukrainian soldiers actually fought against Russia, subby may not be a retard. But even right now, as far as I know, there are direct trains and planes Ukraine-Moscow, with Russians crossing into Ukraine and Ukrainians crossing into Russia, without visa (russian men of fighting age are the exception), so it's not as if Russia and Ukraine closed the borders for each other.

Those soldiers were simply entering Russia as tourists without visa, as is their right.

Is it really true that confronting Russia militarily must automatically trigger a nuclear war? The US needs to stay out of it, but if the EU brought in air support for the Ukraine I don't see how Russia could respond with ICBMs. They know that would lead to their own destruction.

A Pole walking along the road sees a lamp. He picks it up, and as it is covered in crud he gives it quick rub. Out comes a genie.
"I'm the genie of the lamp and I can grant you three wishes," the genie says.
"OK," says the Pole. "I want the China to invade Poland."   The genie is a bit confused, but grants the wish, and the Chinese Army comes all the way from China, invades, and goes backhome.
"Right, second wish.  Wealth?  Power?  Romance?," says the genie.
"No," replies the Pole, "I want the Chinese Army to invade again." So the Chinese come all the way from China, lay waste to more of Poland, and then go home.
"Listen," says the genie. "You have one last wish.  You really want to think carefully."
The Pole smiles and says "I want the Chinese army to invade one more time." So the Chinese army comes again, destroys what's left of Poland, and then goes home for the last time.
"I don't understand," says the genie. "Why did you want the Chinese army to invade Poland three times?"
The Pole smiles and says, "They had to cross Russia six times."

*sigh* the headline was talking about Ukrainian soldiers _returning_ from Russia (150 of those 438 who crossed to Russia have already returned to Ukraine). They were, of course, unarmed, because Russian army have obviously disarmed them once they surrendered. Upon crossing border into Ukraine, in the area supposedly controlled by Ukrainian forces, they (still unarmed, of course, because Ukrainians ain't going to give weapons to "deserters" right away) were fired upon by pro-Russian separatists.

So technically the headline is not exactly retarded. It just tries to put a complex situation into 5 words or less and thus sound retarded. :)

From various other sources, it sounds like the Ukrainian soldiers found themselves in a bad situation, ran out of ammo and supplies so instead of surrendering to the rebels who may not have treated them well or used them as hostages, disabled their heavy equipment so the rebels couldn't use it and walked into Russia unarmed.  If you have no other means to resist, there is no shame in surrender as you may live to fight another day.  It is a propaganda victory for Russia as they have said whatever they wanted for domestic consumption, but it isn't as if they haven't been doing that already regardless of the facts on the battlefield.

Grungehamster: Ukraine says the troops were forced (most likely unintentionally) towards the border by fighting with rebels where they were then captured by Russia.

There is a simple solution... if Russia is telling the truth, then they'd have no problem granting a neutral 3rd-party to interview the soldiers in question, and ask them what happened. But,we all know Russia would never allow that, at least not until they've had a few weeks to use a little good old-fashioned KGB-style persuasion on the soldiers

Electrify: Ukraine has an army? While Russia has a larger one, it is about time they stood up for themselves against Putin and his rebels.

Some pundit has pointed out that would be like Canada attacking the United States.

Are you aware that 150 of those soldiers are already back in Ukraine, where Russia has no control over them and anyone may ask them anything? And the rest have phones and stuff?

It's just that asking people and other journalistish things are _hard_, media can't do it! You can't ask them to! They are re-printing what others have posted, what else do you want them to do?

Damnit, you are right! I keep forgetting that most "journalists" can't be bothered to actually do their jobs.

So then, what is the story, directly from the mouths of those soldiers who have returned? Did their fellow soldiers really desert, or is this yet another Russian snow-job?

I've posted earlier - mostly the soldiers say "being cut off for weeks", "having no water or ammunition", "being promised every day that the help is coming, but having no actual help" left them no choice but to cross into Russia and surrender.

Some of them sound very angry at their command - even betrayed. They, however, profess no love for Russia or separatists.

You have to understand that they can't just say "we don't want to fight anymore", it's desertion, and Ukraine may prosecute them for that. There were 16 Ukrainian soldiers before who crossed into Russia, trying to escape separatist fire, and upon return to Ukraine they were arrested, now under house arrest, waiting for their trial for desertion.

It is unlikely they'll be convicted, but by law it may be up to 15 years in prison. Considering that, some soldiers who are now in Russia genuinely may not want to risk it.

LewDux: Revek: It seems to me the Ukrainians don't want to fight and the Russians know it.

"They were tired of the war and wanted no further part in it," Vasily Malayev, spokesman for the border guards in the Rostov region of Russia, told Reuters by telephone.

I studied out these quotes... Seems legit

How dare you bring credibility to my troll!!!!

Grahor: They won't. They'll respond with Buks and Russian fighters. And while a single Russian fighter is no match for EU fighters, Russia has a lot of them. And then it's hundreds of planes burning across whole Eastern Europe and what's then?

Heh.

And almost all of them will be Russian planes.  No matter how much you suck his cock, your dream boy Putin has a crap assed air force.
