Reminds me of the dispute in Keene, New Hampshire between libertarian free staters and town officials eager to get their hands on some DHS toys. Except Keene's dispute didn't have the thud thud thud of nightsticks into civilian flesh.

His treatment outraged many Delton residents who know Nadwornik for his food drives at local churches. They've packed recent township board meetings, demanding a Michigan State Police investigation

That's some fine police work there, Lou.

The same insurance company canceled its coverage this year for Oakley, a village in Saginaw County, after the police chief there brought in 100 unpaid and uncertified auxiliary officers, some from as far away as metro Detroit, to patrol a town of 290

What the hell is wrong with these people?

His recent offer to train and arm local teachers with handguns was rejected by the Delton Kellogg school district. But the superintendent did allow him to put reserve officers in the schools.  "We really appreciated that," said Superintendent Paul Blacken, who has since retired. "It gave us and the parents a sense of security."

Somehow putting untrained thugs into schools and arming them would not make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The show of force, he told the Free Press, is necessary because of the threats of terrorism, barricaded gunmen and mass shootings.

Towns with a population of 290 are well known for those things...

Most of the 34 civilian, reserve officers - hired and personally trained by Pierce - are from outside the community. He has authorized them to carry guns and sent them out in patrol cars. They are unpaid, and many folks in the township question both their skills and their motivation.

"They're not from around here," said Tony Crosariol, a biochemist who moved his family from Chicago to Barry Township in 1996 because he wanted a peaceful place to live. "These reserve officers are not our friends, they are not our neighbors, their kids don't play sports with my kids."

Of course they're from outside the area.  That way they can play at their SEAL/Ranger fantasies & beat on people without being seriously worried about retaliation against them or their families.  With such a small population & such heavy disgust with/about the police, it shouldn't be that difficult to put a referendum on the next ballot with a residency requirement for any police or reserve officers.  If the officers are getting a huge amount of heat at home because every time his wife goes to the store or his kids go to school they're completely shunned, perhaps the Mrs letting him know that he's completely cut off until he stops his thuggish behavior might work.

The good people of Barry Township need to read up on how the people of Athens, TN dealt with their police force right after WW2.  The parallels aren't the same but the population coming after the police might remind them just who is supposed to be in charge (after burning down/out their APCs of course).

FTA (from some pizza shop owner)

Barker has an opinion as well, but won't share it. "No matter what I say, I'll make somebody mad and lose business."

I agree with this statement.  If you're running a business, don't intentionally ostracize your customer base.  the only reason politics exists is to make money (establish rules for ownership and contracts and prevent self-help, the three things necessary for civilization), you might as well try not to cut off your nose to spite your face.

/ in fact, i like it so much, i would eat pizza there and not talk about my feelings on politics.

One day, and it will be soon, a town is going to rebel against their own police force. People are going to get hurt or killed, and light will be shone upon the problem. However, nothing will be done, until a rebellion is successful. Only then will there be change.

The message is not being received at this time. But one can only ride the back of a tiger for so long. The authorities had better hope and pray that the American public is as forgiving as the populace in South Africa at the end of apartheid. Because this could end in a nationwide bloodbath. I ain't sayin' I agree with it, but I understand it.

It's been pretty well established by numerous cases all over the country that most people don't give a shiat about police officers hurting or killing people. No light will be shone anywhere.

Just for fun, that's the equivalent of 977,000 officers to patrol the city of Chicago. In 2010, the data I found says the had around 12,500.

They need to fire him asap. More importantly, lawsuits need to be filled against the department for every over the top, heavy handed thing they do.

Eventually, the insurance companies will drop them, and the departments will have too demilitarize in order to reduce risk of financial liability.

Outrage rarely changes the world. Finance, on the other hand, can shake the pillars of heaven.

Yes, because the citizens who bought and paid for the completely unnecessary military gear you're keeping at your precinct have no right to see pictures of it.

Really?  I must have left before that debacle. What I do remember of Keene is the police being bored as hell, most of the time; a traffic stop would begin with one cruiser.  Then another would amble on by and stop to see what was going on.  Then another would stop.  Then another .... you see where this is going.  Add to this the behavior of not being around when they are needed ... because they are all at traffic stops trying to figure a way to charge the driver, somehow.

I was a bystander in an end-of-the-night brawl which ended with a kid having part of his face cut loose: the top of his scalp just peeled down to his nose(someone brought a knife to a fistfight).  I spent 15 minutes literally holding his face together and trying to stop the bleeding before the first cop showed up.  This was on the main drag, Main Street.  I was not left with the best impression of the police that night/morning.

You gotta wonder exactly what is going on here. How does the police chief know all these out of towners willing to volunteer to police outside their own communities? Why are they doing this? You'd think they would have more pressing issues at home - jobs, families, etc.

Given the Police Chief is apparently a zealot who thinks God is on his side my first guess would be these are his buddies from a fire and brimstone preaching church outside of town.
