I am not offended by the fish smoking. Or the young lady smoking a cigarette with her vagina at a girlie show that i saw in Bangkok. I am offended by the cigarette put into the mouth of a beheaded victim of the Rape of Nanjing, given how vehemently Japanese even today deny atrocities on 4chan/int and a Farker on a recent thread here.

Teach fish to smoke themselves and we're partway to a self-assembling lox bagels.

Not concerned that the fish is enjoying a brief smoke while he can.  I am, of course, OUTRAGED that he or she is a passenger on a boat and not wearing a lifejacket.

See kids, you keep smoking and you'll turn into a fish.

You don't want to be a fish, do you?

THAT's where the bagels come in.  Damned things get waterlogged as lifejackets.

Like fish actually have lungs that enable them to smoke... unless its a lung fish (which it isn't)

2014-08-04 02:02:06 PM
Wait. So, if the fish have taken up smoking, and you ascribe equal rights to animals, isn't it their right/choice to smoke if they want to?

Evidently, this is a real thing.
See...  Once I was in Atlantis, in the Bahamas.  Right around one of the pools where they keep a few sharks, there will little plaques on the ground saying, "Please don't throw your butts on the ground.  The fish are coming out and smoking them.  We are trying to get them to quit."

So yeah...  It's for real.

Well, now I want to invest in the fish smoking patches.

I think the outrage is a little valid. Fish enjoy being out in the air about as much as we enjoy breathing water. Want to catch it, kill it, and eat it? Fine. Want to catch it and throw it right back? Okay. But to catch it and keep it alive, out of water, just for human entertainment? There's something a little sociopathic about that.

I'm not saying the fish has "feelings" about it. I'm saying it's causing serious physical distress to a living thing. For a cheap laugh? Somethin' wrong with that boy.

You aren't wrong, but that's a bit heavy for a video of a fish smoking a cigarette.

One poster said: "Just looking at the fish's obviously scared eyes makes me feel very sad. Poor thing, that must have felt horrible. Animal cruelty is not funny."

Because if there's one thing fish are well-known for, it's their wide range of emotive facial expressions.

It's a fish.  On the scale of amoeba to chimp it falls below the sympathy threshold.  Unless the thing is endangered I'm no more offended than people hooking live worms for sport fishing.

When the fish tell me they don't want to smoke, then I'll worry about whether or not they want to smoke. Until then, light up, Finny-me-boy.

I just had the poster for all the cute animals on it, so I guess it wasn't a very good ad campaign. Animals shooting guns, now--that's clearly an anti-war promotion.

Honestly, I don't see this as being cruel.

From the sound of whatever language that was they were speaking, and the condition of the boat, I'm willing to be bet those were actual fishermen pulling stuff up to actually eat themselves.  They weren't sport fishing, they were subsistence fishing.  Spoiler, most people who fish for their dinner don't take specially made containers filled with water to put the fish they catch in so that they can breath.  They also don't typically stop and bash the heads of small fish in to put them out of their misery.  No, they haul the fish up, toss them in the boat, and go back to trying to catch another one while the first one air drowns.

Thats pretty damned common around the world.

These guys  were bored and stuck a cigarette in it's mouth to have a little fun.  Not like they likely have television out there, and they're probably illiterate as well, so no books or magazines.

Finally, its a damned fish.  It probably doesn't even have a brain complex enough to understand what is happening to it in the first place, much less be any more distressed by it than it already is from the fact that its air drowning.
