He also got into an accident with a Smart Car, but it's okay - one of the passengers survived.

Three motorists slowed their vehicles to surround the boy and protect him from other vehicles that might not see him, O'Leary said. Someone was able to get out of their vehicle, and grab the boy and his ride off the parkway.

That strikes me as goddamn awesome.  Well done, folks.

I always thought NY drivers were retarded, this confirms it!

For those of you not from NY this is a notorious speedway for the ricer crowd on the weekends and almost any day.

They come tearing up out of the Bronx racing each other and not infrequently disemboweling/decapitating  themselves and their passengers in some of the most horrific and obscene examples of vehicular homicide ever seen.

the other parkways contribute from time to time as well

http://nypost.com/2013/11/09/2-dead-in-horrific-3-car-pileup/

Its a Robert Moses-designed  parkwaywith a designed speed of 50 mph with trees, short sight distances and in some places serious non banked curves.

This kid is luckier than anyone.

Kudos to the drivers of those cars that protected him. Absolutely amazing outcome on a par with the best that NY people come up with time to time

I don't see what's so artistic about that.

The kid is just preparing himself for the night when he will have to drive his mom and dad home from the bar.

And the Saw Mill through Westchester. Darwin got one of the racers just last week.

Good thing all the troopers are staked out on the Taconic Parkway up in Millbrook in case somebody's doing 66 in a 55 zone on their way to Tanglewood for the James Taylor gig. Those people are a menace.

Friend's [autistic] kid did this. Hopped into his little motorized car whatever and went for a spin, only got stopped when he crossed the Sagamore bridge some 5-6 miles away.

Apparently, wanted to go visit his dad at work. In Boston.

I was thinking about that when I read it. A slowed or stopped car might well be rear-ended. Another way they were lucky.

Of course he is. After all, his dad did let him drive on the driveway.

/But you may have to repeat it a few times before I'm thoroughly convinced.

I can't stand that road!I will not drive on it. If we go, I make my husband do it. You have not lived till you get cut off by some woman cutting through all the lanes, putting on her makeup and talking on her cell phone.

Why would you buy an autistic kid a motorized car?

Call me an asshole, but how did the kid get on the highway? I'm glad people were there to handle the situation but some dumbass kid almost ruined potentially dozens of lives and nearly got himself killed by being there.

Why not? Autism covers a wide spectrum, some of us can even post on internet forums.

Well, I assume he turned from the road onto the exit ramp and merged into traffic.

Probably so they could have the experience of driving a car once in their lifetime? The massive social body/car language clusterfark that is driving tends to walk away people who have social problems or worse.
