A great innovator as a jazz trumpeter, who pushed technique on the instrument ( = greatly admired by the classical players as well) while advancing the improvisor's art/craft and, indeed, the whole concept of swing. And then there's the whole vocalist thing--distinctive and likewise innovative/influential.

As with Nat "King" Cole, a lot of the public was so entertained by Armstrong's singing that they stopped caring much about the man's great ability as an instrumentalist.

IIRC, Louis was the oldest person ever to have a #1 pop recording on an American chart--no mean feat.
