Frederick: What does Beyonce have to do with Rock & Roll?

This.

But this is the same institution that thinks the Ojays are more rock and roll than Chicago, Yes, or the Electric Light Orchestra.

"An urn with Freed's ashes was taken from its spot at the Cleveland museum on Friday, and Freed's son will pick up his father's remains Monday, according to Executive Director Greg Harris."

"The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will open a new fashion exhibition centered around singer, producer and entertainment industry powerhouse Beyoncé. The exhibit will open on Tuesday, July 22, 2014"

CNN headline is planely wrong

That place is a giant waste of space.  It's built so weird with balconies and hallways stuck in there is no room for any exhibits.
Rooms devoted to Rolling Stone magazine covers and TVs showing MTV clips from the 80s!

There is so much they could have done but the space is wasted (luckily the gift shop is twice as big as any exhibit they have)

Why fail?  Museums rotate what's out on display all the time.

Alan Freed was the only legitimate reason to have the HOF in Cleveland.

Damn, Memphis must have terrible business leadership to let that slip away.

Nearly every major blues or rock pioneer came from or through Memphis.

I would have no idea who this is if it weren't for watching 'Drunk History' this weekend.

Alan's remains should be allowed at the RNRHOF for as long as his family/estate is willing to pay them off monthly to keep him in such a high-rotation spot.

It would probably be different had they chose to embalm instead of cremate him.

That's because they hired starchitect I.M. Pei to design it. The goal was for the building to look impressive, not for it to be very functional. I saw an interview with Pei about designing the building. He said he never listed to rock music so he had some played for him. After listening, he decided that 'Power' was going to be the theme of the building and inspire his design. Which of course is wanker talk for "I'm going to be different to be different and the actual function doesn't matter". Guess it could have been worse. A decade earlier Brutalism would have been the in style so you'd get to deal with crumbling concrete falling on your head.

Meh. Visited the museum when it opened, just because I had tix for the concert. It was cool to see the "Wall" display on the top floor, and a few old guitars and outfits. Concert was pretty epic. /RIP Johnny Cash

Karma's a biatch, Freed.  Don't go stealing "Moondog" from blind street performers.

Went once not long after Ray Charles died. His display was cool - Braille Playboy mags included. Sought out the Hendrix stuff then spent the rest of the time watching the movies/documenteries in the theater.
And yes indeed the layout of the place is a joke, I kept hearing people say either they were stuck walking in circles, or that "all roads lead to the gift shop".

Last year while at Cedar Point, it crossed my mind to go to Cleveland to see the RRHOF.  Dos that count?

The place is overpriced, overrated, and they don't even let you take pictures in there. How Rock and Roll is that? In the stuffy Smithsonian museums (which are free by the way) you can take pictures all day long to your heart's delight. I tried try to take one picture of the lobby in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame and I got yelled at.

They really need to just call it the Music Hall of Fame.

That said, I think all HOFs are completely pointless.

Was that recently? Went way back in 98 and they had special camera check station to hold everyone's cameras while they were funneled to the gift shop, er, I mean, walked thru the exhibits. I often wondered what they do now that smart phones exist. Do they post staff all over to prohibit pics?

When I worked at Cedar Point back in 2003, they had employee field trips, and the RRHOF was one of them. I got a chance to see the John Lennon exhibit they had at the time. The freakiest thing I saw was the glasses he got shot in.

So yeah, fark moving Alan Freed's ashes in the name of Beyonce. I have nothing against her, but it's a MUSEUM! Show some respect!

I heard Kurt Cobain was huge starting out in Memphis, as was Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Kiss, Aerosmith, Guns N Roses ...

One of the display cases at the RRHOF has pieces of Otis Redding's plane in it. There's some damned morbid stuff on public view there.

Removing Alan Freed and replacing him with Beyoncé?  Why not digitally eliminate Bob Hope from
the "Road" movies and insert Justin Bieber? (Answer:  Because Justin Bieber can't act for beans.)

I think the biggest problem people have with this, is Beyonce is NOT in any way shape or form a rock and roll artist. She might be a hip-hop, R&B or rap artist, but I don't see how anyone can possibly connect her to the rock and roll scene at all. Especially since all of her music is auto-tuned into a bland homogenous pulp and then loudness-equalized into oblivion.
