The Wire has a cast of dozens and like three of them are white. (Except in season 2, obviously).

He was what you would call an honourable gangster in the Wire, a decent guy in the thick of the street life.

On one hand, this is terrible.

On the other hand there's a perpetual 30% chance of being stabbed in DC nightclubs.

Actually, season two ended up my favorite. Ziggy and The Greek were two excellent characters and the story arc was great. Very tragic ending, but the last couple episodes were extremely powerful.

That being said, it's most farkers least favorite season.

Yeah, season two was one of the best although it's hard to get into if you're coming straight off of season one. Season five was weakest IMO.

Basically on Thursday through Saturday nights, they turn the lights down and bring in a portable PA setup. I guess that makes it a club. They take a lot of overflow from Eden (a real club) next door. Still an ok restaurant during the day.

/Bottom Line is more fun

I just want to know why such a great show chose to use a slightly worse version of the intro song with each new season. Were they told they couldn't be perfect, so they just decided to get it taken care of right at the outset?

God yes. The second season intro song is like nails on a chalkboard compared to first season.

That would be Tom Waits.  And that's actually his original song (on the Frank's Wild Years album).    The first season was a cover by Blind Boys of Alabama.   3rd Season was a cover by The Neville Brothers.   The last season was a cover by Steve Earle.

Loved the Ziggy storyline. Waiting for more Brother Mouzone. And Omar.

I bet Season 5 is most farkers least favorite season. After the supreme awesomeness that was Season 4, Season 5 was a "letdown." It was still pretty good, but the newspaper story and the fake serial killer storyline wasn't anywhere near as good as the kids in the shiatty school system.

2 starts way slow and ends with 3-4 episodes that will punch you in the gut.  3rd season is fantastic given the reason they decide to take care of the drug problem, albeit for a bit.  Season 4 to me just seemed....rushed?  It felt really weird to me.

I'll throw in with the others that say give season 2 a chance. It seems distant and disconnected from the MCU/Barskdale plot of season 1, but it really comes together at the end and puts a lot of things in place for season 3. If you watch The Wire again from start to finish, Season 2 will surprise you with all the stuff that was there in plain sight but missed.

I still love Season 5.    I never thought the serial killer stuff was any more sensational than many of the sideplots in the series (Valchek's police fan that gets sent around the world, Brother Mouzone).    The newspaper stuff was completely on point, and journalism is every bit the crumbling institution that the decaying school systems and corrupt politicians are.

Mostly, I thought Season 5 had the perfect ending as the  prequels for Seasons 1-3.    By the final episode, you came to know exactly how Omar, Avon, Stringer  and Bubs came to be through Michael, Randy, Donut and Dukie's stories

Yeah, completing the cycle was a good way to go out. But the treatment of the media lacked the nuance of their approach to other institutions. It felt like the showrunners knew the media was the logical choice and they had to tackle it, but they weren't particularly interested in it.

And the problem with the serial killer business wasn't so much the silliness of it (after all, Hamsterdam worked, among other things) as how far off the rails they had to jump multiple characters to get that creaky-ass plot moving. The show went off the rails with them, busying itself with pushing along that left-field bullshiat rather than developing anything that felt real, and in the end there wasn't time for the season to recover.

There's no reason whatsoever, given everything they already had in motion - cops, education, local politics, unions, gangs - that they couldn't have brought the media into play with something organic. Which in turn would have made the newspaper stuff seem like less of an afterthought bolted onto the interconnected city of the previous four seasons.

If you know anything about David SImon and his background, you would know he was "interested" in his critique of journalism.  Probably moreso than any other subject he tackled on the show.

He was holding a mirror up of modern journalism that he had seen with his own eyes and personally experienced.   If it wasn't nuanced, it's because the reality of journalism today really is that patently absurd.

Fine, maybe he was too close to make a good story of it. Whatever the underlying problem, on-screen the media stuff seemed perfunctory, tacked-on, and ham-handed - which is the opposite of what made the writing on The Wire great as a rule. (Not that season 5 wasn't good tv, but it was despite this.) It didn't help that their main entry point to the media was a steaming pile of"serial killer" that was wholly extraneous to the various media-friendly threads begging to be pulled from the previous four seasons.
