She has a very sweet voice.

This should end well

Great voice, decent lyrics, nice tune.

That said, the chorus and bridge were too similar do it made the song kind of drag.

Also, I think it needed more visual stimulation.  Have her watch some old Plasmatics videos before making her next one.  Consider ending the video by taking a chainsaw to the phonograph and setting it and whoever broke her heart on fire.

Also, lose the text apology intro.  It sets a negative tone, by the time the video actually started you had already convinced me that it sucked.

Talented gal.  Look forward to more music and more self-confident videos.

I'll second these observations.
I give points for courage to make the video.
Pretty girl.

Neat hat.

2014-08-03 02:45:26 PM
Dittos on getting rid of the text apology intro.  Nice voice but I'd be interested in hearing something a bit more up tempo.  Oh, and have her play with a puppy -- everybody loves puppies.

2014-08-03 03:41:57 PM
I kept waiting for the "hook ", you know the part of a song that is catchy and memorable. It all blends together too much, as Brap said.

Not bad though. Nice voice.

2014-08-03 04:14:26 PM
It's kinda Lilith fair. I mean you can do the grainy video her running in the field that would be very 90's

Or her walking around in a small town with a guitar strapped to her, very India arie boho looking/sounding.

2014-08-03 04:43:38 PM
Nice voice, annoying song.

2014-08-03 04:54:43 PM
I cringed at the way she handled the vinyl!

2014-08-03 04:54:53 PM
Meh. Shows promise talent-wise. Really need to lose the elevator music and go for something a little more inspiring, though. I'd expect to hear this kind of music in an Office Space-esque cubicle farm populated by 40-year-old whales.

2014-08-03 04:55:40 PM
Before I comment, I have one question. How old is the girl?

2014-08-03 05:25:07 PM
I really enjoyed the song! She's got a nice voice and it was engaging all the way to the end. Second on removing the apology intro. No need for it, it was enjoyable just as it was. Good luck to her!

2014-08-03 05:26:14 PM
I liked much of it. I agree completely with the text about Windows and Movie Maker setting the wrong tone. It's true stuff, but irrelevant.

That said, I think the video needs a lot more stop motion animation and encourage her to watch Peter Gabriel videos or Wallace and Gromit. I don't think I saw any stop motion animation, and I think that's almost always a misstep for videos.

I'm not sure when I would listen to this song. It's not a road song. And, well, well maybe if I had taken a lot of heroin or something, yeah, then it would be cool.

So there are my responses: more stop motion, kicker music like in a road song or anthem, and yeah. That.

2014-08-03 05:28:31 PM
Either replace the video with some quality B&W photos of her, or get some Bronies to make a PMV out of it.

Otherwise, nice song, and she has a lovely voice.

What he said.

If that was a first effort, then it was pretty good.

Let's hope for more.

The video is terrible. Aspect ratio is wrong, resolution is low, lighting is bad, terrible frame rate, bad editing, no color-correction, and it's made with Windows Movie Maker.

Did you ask me to watch the video or listen to the song? Cause I didn't listen to the song, I watched it muted cause you asked about the video.

2014-08-03 06:13:23 PM
Ok, I'll do it:

Feed her a couple sammiches and I'll give you a cow and 3 goats for her.

2014-08-03 06:20:28 PM
Nice song. Maybe needs an uptempo upbeat section to provide some contrast to the quieter bits. Your daughter has a nice voice. Very Lilith Fair (in a good way)

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz... (but keep trying!  Better luck next time.)  Any attempts at Art or creativity are appreciated by All despite the opinions of those of us who have actual taste.  Singing in tune and a camera-phone equal actual talent.

Nice critique!  (really.  no snark)

The song wasn't my thing, she has a nice enough voice, but it seemed like she was stretching and squashing to fit the lyrics. Another thing is that most people expect some sort of "bite" in the song... unless it was intended as a lullabye. I'm not talking blazing guitars or anything like that, just a vocal hook that perks up a song and draws listeners in, as well as making it something worth returning to.

Another thing... use the YouTube graphs. They will tell you when the viewers stopped watching it, which is a good indication of where you can make improvements. Unfortunately, I suspect you will have a number of people who tuned out in the first 40 seconds where there was nothing but silence and the apology/bitachfest message downer.

Immediately delete the text at the outset.  It insults the artists.  As for the video and the song/singer, there's something to work with here.  She has a perfect voice for country/bluegrass.  As soon as she began I thought of bluegrass, and hoped it would pick up the pace.  As for the song, it's a bit too sad and wordy and there isn't enough variation in the music.  Someone may have pointed out above that the bridge didn't make a break in the rhythm of the song, that's a good observation.  In order for me to want to listen to a song which is that self-indulgent and sad, it kind of has to be done as a more entertaining thing.  I wouldn't buy the song.  But I also think that this is not her best work, as it isn't the best video you can produce.  She's got enough tools to make a much better song.  The video is ok, considering the song.  I will gladly listen to and watch the next one y'all produce.

Also, if she took off more of her clothes  . . .  (just kidding)

2014-08-03 07:33:00 PM
Song:  Hell of a lot better than I could do, but as others noted it sort of monotonously plods along.  Needs a bridge or something.

Video: Eh.

But it's pretty obvious that she's got talent.  Almost every big star has a beginning effort that, in hindsight, they are embarrassed by - even though at the time they were quite proud of it.  Keep working at it!

lindalouwho: She has a very sweet voice.

I have to agree, but I kind of got tired of the, I guess I'll call it "little girl" voice (at about conversational volume) at least a couple of decades ago.  It can be used well when in contrast with something like a belting or at least exuberant bridge/chorus.

Other than that bias of mine, I think the song and performance were pleasing.

I can't sing at all.
If I sing in the shower the water stops running.

She has some similarities to Mazzy star.  I liked Mazzy star, but it does have a 90's feel to it.

2014-08-03 08:30:49 PM
I actually really like the song. If I still used iTunes, I might have bought it.

2014-08-03 08:40:56 PM
Home grown music video. Make and use a cheap steady cam rig. If you spend more than 5 to 10 bucks you spent too much (many youtube tutorials). Go ahead and buy something like vegas studio pro platinum or some other vid editing software, its worth it. (less than 100 or even 50 bucks) get a decent desktop and do not try editing on a laptop.  If you are going to use a studio make sure you get ALL the recorded music including outtakes. (just in case you want to edit things like put in an extended bridge for the video) if it is just her singing, you can make a home studio pretty cheaply. Do not use a usb mic, spring for a quality dynamic such as a sm50 or a large diaphram condenser mic such as the AT2020 both are inexpensive and give studio quality sound. Get a 2 channel box run the XLR into the box (presonus makes one for around 50? or 100 bucks) and usb to the comp. record away. If you do not want to do the mixing and editing find someone who will.

There are many choices here and it all depends on what you want to spend. There will be those that say oh that is crap or this is bs or do it this way or that. Do it the way you are comfortable with, at your price level and what works.

I hate the 30 second intro. I don't know why Youtube artists don't just write what they want to say in the description. At least she didn't start by talking, those always irk me.

Having said that, not bad. She has a nice voice. Sounded a bit like  Jewel in certain parts there and the song was not bad.

Finally not enough cleavage, could only watch about 2 minutes before i tabbed out.

2014-08-03 09:53:07 PM
Another vote for really nice voice, not my style of music though-i don't play pretty music.

2014-08-03 10:03:37 PM
Not one mention about her "hitability". I'm speaking musically of course.

2014-08-03 10:20:48 PM
Good voice, cute girl, and some nice video shots. Song was not to my tastes, but that is just personal preference. She would do much better with a better song, seemed a bit repetitive. She has a very pretty voice, and with a better tune, some electric guitars and bass, (a la Evanessence style) the whole thing would have gone off better, with a better result. Still, a nice effort, and tell her to keep trying. Also, the way the video was shot, just lent a odd feeling of depression. Good if you were going for that, not so good if you weren't.

2014-08-03 10:28:03 PM
Seriously, I like her voice, which has a slightly Scottish/Canadian feel to it.

2014-08-03 10:29:24 PM
Pretty, nice voice, bad song. Needs more pep, vim and vigor.

Here's some good advice on instrumental and vocal hooks.

Have her watch that one.

But make sure she doesn't go into an uptempo song after playing with the puppy if it's a dead puppy.

I don't really care for the video, but I love her voice. Very very very nice voice. The song is nice, but I agree with another poster who was waiting for the catch and how it all blends together. It's still nice though. I would listen to it over and over.

2014-08-04 12:50:17 AM
Her voice is very good but...does she have any vocal training?  Maybe she was just nervous in the studio or something but she sounded very raw.  Still very talented.

I am absolutely shocked at the tone in this thread. When did Fark grow up? Not that I'm complaining. I thought it would go down hill pretty quickly.

Ehh. She's no Rebecca Black.

good voice
Her style reminds me a little bit of "the sundays", except more monotone:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z778slDEsds

Video was boring not to mention the worst lighting I've ever seen (was that filmed through a video camera from the early 80's?).  Even an iphone4 would have taken better video.

2014-08-04 07:54:31 AM
I was confused from the start.  What was that strange black 'disc' thing she was holding?  Aren't those what they throw in the Olympics?  Was that some kind of 'launcher' she was setting it on, so it would fly really far?

Kids today, huh?  They always have the latest cool toys.

As for the much-maligned Movie Maker, the problem is that Microsoft screwed the pooch a few years ago by taking out the Timeline feature, which was, naturally, the part that made it easy to use.  The older version still had a few quirks, but hey, it was free.  Download link and instructions for the older version are here.

As for the song, I agree with some of the others.  Needed a better 'hook' and a bit more orchestration.  Otherwise, a pretty decent voice -- and this without AutoTune™!

2014-08-04 11:01:13 AM
Quite a lot of natural ability, a sweetness, down to earth. I think she has a terrific indie career awaiting her.

Subby -- is she playing coffeehouses, etc. yet? Does she have a few more songs to round out such appearances?

Thanks for sharing. It's always delightful to see new talent emerge.

By requesting snark, the submitter engaged Fark's beta of the "subtle sarcasm" option.  All the comments that appear to be thoughtful and complimentary are actually mean and snarky.  You just can't tell because they've all disguised them so well.

You can see the same thing in threads where people make mention of Justin Bieber's excellent life choices and Lindsay Lohan's sense of style and propriety.

She might do well in a duo like Lexy and Stephany.
