Just read yesterday that the homicide rate in Chicago is currently as low as it's been since 1963 according to the CPD superintendent. That Detroit and New Orleans are actually the cities with the highest homicide rates in the country. Comparing yourself to those cities is probably not a great way to shoot for the moon though.

Chicagoans might be bad shots, but even they wouldn't shoot for the moon. Well, not unless it was coming right at them.

Chicago has been cooking the crime stats for a while now.

I'm too lazy to look through the Farkives, but do we have articles submitted regularly about shooting stats in other major cities, like LA or Seattle or Houston or Miami?

/You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and tell racially or politically tinged lies?

It's amazing what happens when you bring in a cop to be superintendent who ran his last gig so well it's under a DoJ investigation for civil rights violations.

There is some truth to that.  CPD tend to be on the lazy side.  On a very cold winter night I called them because someone smashed my car's window and ransacked the car.  When someone showed up he refused to get out of his car and looked at me like I was crazy for suggesting he leave the warmth of his car.  "I'll write up the police report right here.  That's all you need for your insurance company."

I had a few things stolen from my apartment this last spring. I called 311 because I wasn't sure it was stolen until we confirmed that my GF's transit pass had been used on bus routes that are several miles from where we live and don't go anywhere near any place we'd been.  I reported it as theft and get the report number. They said it'd be mailed to me in a few days. I waited two weeks for it and didn't get it. I went to the local precinct to get a copy. They hemmed and hawed until I told them I needed it for an insurance claim (a lie, the deductible was more than what was stolen). I got a copy and it was classified as 'lost property.'

I was thinking the exact opposite.

They should relax all their gun laws, because clearly the problem is that there aren't enough upstanding citizens that won't shoot someone walking around without guns....or something.

Not sure why, but you'd be surprised at the number of banks that get knocked over in the loop. I swear it's every couple of weeks. But realistically most of those crimes are going to be theft or robbery. Plenty of shops in the area, so shoplifting is going to contribute. Here's a breakdown by Trib
