The character's deadpan literalism was perfectly tailored to his talents.

All of this. His comedic timing was dead on. Great direction and Bautista was really good.

The article justifies its existence by asking a question that is completely premised on a weak correlation that it never even comes close to demonstrating.

Since when is mediocre a noun?

The Tor Johnson curse? This writer really went digging for a topic. How many people have heard of Tor Johnson, let alone some "movie curse" he has pinned on him?

Besides, The Rock is successful in films, so this whole article is shiat to begin with.

2014-08-03 02:41:13 PM
Did the author of TFA call Nash's portrayal of The Russian in Thomas Jane's  The Punisher a misstep? I thought that seen was freakin' awesome.

2014-08-03 02:59:58 PM
I like how the idiot author calls the Rock's stardom "inexplicable".  Because it's not like he's a talented entertainer or anything.

Somebody put this guy through a table.

And his nervousness in front of Brando was genuine.  But it worked and Coppola decided to keep it in the movie.

Isn't the real problem many wrestlers are given action roles from uninspired shoot'em ups to capitalize on current fame without needing to spend money on a real name for acting? Those films tend to at least make even, if I recall, and therefore are not the worst investment when you consider the talent being sourced and developed such as co-stars, directors, etc..

No Rifftrax for Hell Comes to Frogtown yet. There are however 3 sequels starring the likes of Robert Z'Dar, Lou Ferrigno, and Joe Estevez.

Actually, I think they want the body type, and finding an actor who is in that kind of shape is harder than you'd think. Bautista is big enough to be Drax. That's not the case of many people.

I do not mean the roles are given simply because of current fame of the wrestler but rather the appearance of an action star is, as you note, important, and therefore why not use one of the more famous wrestlers of which many have the appearance. I am sure Bautista fit the physique as well as expression the director wanted for Drax due to Guardians being rather high profile compared to many of the films I was mentioning.

I've got a DVD of Ed Wood signed by Steele, and a photograph of him choking me which I'm very proud of. Got to meet him at a minor league game a few years ago, really nice guy, not tall but huge hands. We talked about how he used to color his tongue green, and he asked me to guess what he used. I guessed food coloring and he said, Nah, that just gets everywhere. Turns out he'd eat Clorets, and that would do the trick. So now whenever I see any footage of his old matches I imagine the refreshing mint fragrance that must have filled the ring, and I laugh. Because that's hilarious.
