I'd like to add "natural disasters" to "regional conflicts" for supplementing my knowledge of world geography. It's terrible that people died, and yet my first instinct was, "Where the hell is Yunnan province?"

That's right subby, when we have a surplus of people in your mind, what's a few human lives between brown people.

I vote that all death tolls be expressed in percentage of the local country's population.

They were replaced in just under 4 minutes according to the latest demographic information.

/They can replace the entire population of Rhode Island in approximately 3 weeks.

367 dead, 1,300 injured and at least 12,000 homes destroyed is sad but what is truly sad is that it was only a 6.1 quake. If that happened here the death and injuries would be far fewer. This is the price much of the world pays for horribly corrupt government and zero regulation.

Good news everyone! That's a few hundred less people. Which means a few hundred less babies the government will have to abort in a few years.

And what percent of the US population was killed on 9/11? I'm sure it was negligible and of no consequence and those killed were of no import. Just some stupid Yankees who chose to work in the wrong place. It was all their fault actually for working there. Right subby you sick twisted fark.

Certainly would have put 9/11 in the proper perspective and might have kept us from losing our collective shiat and overreacting with the patriot act and the TSA.

Learning about (and visiting) China changes one's perspective in many ways. Most people know that cities like Beijing and Shanghai are very large, but here are a few more:

Chongqing
Dongguan
Guangzhou
Hangzhou
Shantou
Shenyang
Tanjin
Wuhan
Xian

Big deal, a list of random Chinese cities, right? Each of them is as large or larger than NYC, and 99% of people outside of China have never heard of them. I think China recently hit 100 cities with a population over one million.

Anyway, regarding Yunnan province; it's pretty cool place. The geography is stunning (the Stone Forest is there), with the Himalayas on one end and jungles on the other. Nearly all the major rivers in SE Asia flow through it, and it's very high in biodiversity (unfortunately for the biodiversity, it also has a lot of mineral wealth). If you've ever wanted to visit China and spend some time outside the major cities, Yunnan is the place to go.

It's even worse when you consider the buildings were evacuated and the planes were actually unmanned missiles.

Are we sure the "earthquake" is not a State cover-up of the Muslim uprising in the part of China.

/I'm jaded.

The death of 1 person is a tragedy. The death of 0.0000109974% is a statistic.

Mass shootings should be reported like this. The NRA would love it.

That wasn't a bunch of school kids, it was a minute fraction of the population.

I vote we have it expressed in percentage of the percenters.
So, what percent of the 1%ers died and what percent of the 99%ers died.
