The people watching seemed to think that the whales were theirs, or something. I wish someone had told them that they are not the hell their whales.

"No, you said, 'Admiral, if we were to assume these whales were ours to do with as we pleased, we would be as guilty as those who caused (past tense) their extinction.' I have a photographic memory, I see words."

The correct answer is...: Kirk: If we play our cards right, we may be able to find out when those whales are being released.
Spock: How will playing cards help?

I'm surprised the humpbacks even slow down there.

Monterrey Bay is infested with thug orca packs, who like to kill things for fun.

"The bureaucratic mentality is the only constant in the universe."

Also, if you look up "The one with the whales" on Wikipedia, you get the entry for  Star Trek IV.

I always wondered about ST:IV if due to the butterfly effect and temporal paradox if the removal of those two whales from their time period was actually the event that orchestrated the extinction of that species in the first place.

If I can get away from the ST-IV comments for a second... we've had blue whales migrating very near the coast here in San Diego. Even had one tip over a small boat (no one hurt, another boat was nearby to pick up the crew).

/Yay El Nino!!

I never thought of it before, but in The Wrath of Khan the storyline was inspired by Moby Dick, from the perspective of the whale being hunted, and now here they're saving the whale in The Voyage Home.

I'm not quite sure what that means - if Kirk was, in effect, trying to save or redeem himself, or if they just predicted William Shatner would look like a whale.

Why did they need water and a tank for the whales when they could just put them in zero gravity?

Like whales, can't stand being on open water.  Hopped in the car after seeing this.  Drove two hours to Moss Landing.  Drove in circles for an hour to find a parking spot. Walked half an hour from parking place to shore. No whales.  Slipped on rocks trying to get a view of the sea lions hanging out in the harbor and lost most of the skin on my left wrist.  Drove four hours home bleeding (NB 101 on Sunday afternoon sucks.)

Thanks a lot, Subby.
