lindalouwho: No, the moral seems to be don't be on the street at 2am while lending your phone to a stranger.

Pretty damn much. I've stopped on the road to help someone out, but I make the call for help for them, and if there are multiple folks, you keep a distance until you can figure out what is up exactly. Folks may still try to get froggy, and you deal with that as it comes, but use some damn sense people. Humans are itchy, nasty, and unpredictable as a whole, despite there being stellar examples out there.

That being said, I've helped folks out in a bind, and given them a place to stay while they get back on their feet, or at least a hot meal, and I move fair slowly in their presence and keep an eye on the silverware. I've collected a fair number of strays over the years, and you do what you can to help, when you can, but that doesn't mean being an idiot about it.

First of all, i don't go wandering around city streets at 2 am. Secondly, someone walking up to you at that time is probably up to no good. Tell him to back off.

FTA: "The suspect is described by police as an African-American man dressed in a blue suit and tie. He was clean-shaven, approximately 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds."

That seems a little surprising, I was expecting a hobo or drug addict or something. I guess I can't fault the victim too much if the guy didn't seem dangerous.

First tell tale sign of problems -- clean shaven black guy in a business suit, out at 2 am.  On the other hand, it might have been Obama.

I agree for the most part, but seeing someone well dressed/groomed might have relaxed their guard. I don't know anything about this area either, so maybe it's a bad area any time of the day, I dunno.

I live 2 blocks from here. It happened outside of a gym and sandwich shop on the same street as hundreds of bars, University Ave. North Park typically isn't sketchy, it's a gentrified area of central SD about 3-5 miles from downtown. 2AM walking home from bars from the 18-40 crowd is very, very common in this area. Hell, I go to get smokes around this time often. Weirdest thing I've seen at that time is a bunch of real young mexican kids (3-6 y.o.) walking around in a crew swinging plastic swords.

We don't even know what really happened. Wait till the police make and arrest, and investigate. At this point, all we know is that two guys who got stabbed told the police a story. It might be true.
Lets review the stoery.
1. A violent thug, intent upon taking their phone approaches them. He the asks to borrow the phone.
Hmmmm. Okaaaaay.

2.. Having gotten ahold of their phone by deceit, he then turns and bolts like a rabbit....oh, wait. No. For some unexplained reason, he stays around and fights with them. Somehow, even though he has the phone in his possession, and stabs the guys, they get the phone back (???). Only then, he runs away.
Again: Okaaaaaay.

At this point, I'm giving this a big fat maybe. I'll wait for the facts before I make up my mind.

2014-08-03 10:15:29 AM
Or... Or, maybe it went down like this:

Black guy in business suit is on his phone, telling his gf that he will be home soon because he was pulling an all nighter and his car broke down and decided he would rather walk home, when two guys rush him.  Thankfully, he remembered to carry his 6in. folding knife that he picked up from Academy, because you never know what might go down; yeah, and his gf always rolled her eyes at the thought that in this day and age a little knife was going to make the difference between life and death.

Black guy says: "let's be cool about this, here you can have my wallet too", and reaches in his pocket and pulls out the knife and opens at the same time because everyone knows if you own a folding blade you practice the little wrist maneuver to flick it open.

He slashes one in the arm who howls out in pain and then lunge stabs the second as he turned and fled.

At this point the dementors showed up and he had to run away too because he took that knife instead of his wand this morning.

And that is how Harry Potter killed Voldermort.

It completely depends upon whether they acquired the knife or the suit first. Having either can assist you in acquiring the other, but the methods are different.

As through this world I've traveled,
I've met lots of funny men.
Some rob you with a six-gun.
Some use a fountain pen.

It's just amusing to see our "skeptical" Farkers, who are always so quick to call bullshiat on any story that is suspect, or even simply unverifiable, when given a crime story with a black villain, swallow it whole without question.
If this was a story about some black waitress claiming that some non-tipper left her a nasty, racist note, you can bet the credulity factor would be a WHOLE lot lower.

You're absolutely right. I'm poor, and I never use my phone. That's why I have a pay-by-the-minute phone and I never let anyone use it. Those minutes cost money. I just look at people and say, "Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters?" and then I laugh and laugh.

Actually...we had a similarly dressed guy sneak into our offices during an evening event and steal a couple laptops. He had pulled similar capers around the area. He didn't look shady (was wearing a suit, very polite) and he picked good times to sneak in. We happened to be having an evening event that brought a number of people unknown to the staff into the building.
