"He should have said, 'Look, in some cases the health care plans that you've got are really inadequate, and in your own interests, we're going to change them,'" Frank said. "But that's not what he said."

I agree. These are the people who managed to make people believe that Obama told business people they never built their own businesses by taking a quote out of context.

Speak in absolutes and they will always find the exception to the rule.

He should have stressed that never-pay catastrophic insurance policies were going away and here's why that is a good thing.

He lied the same way Obama lied.  His false assurances and promisesabout the stability and operation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to Congress contributed (in part) to their inevitable failing and the ensuing housing collapse

That's not even the whole story. The insurance companies weren't required to give them a new plan, just meet the requirements of the law.

You could have in fact kept your policy, except a private company that makes billions of dollars in profit decided that they could stand to make a bit more, and canceled your plan.

"If you like your health care plan (and it adheres to new federal standards) (and your insurance provider doesn't change their contracts like they do every year) (and you don't consciously agree and sign on to a new contract that's different from the one you used to have) you can keep it" doesn't roll off the tongue though. In a technical sense, tying being able to keep your prior insurance coverage with "if you like it" was a lie if you strip all context and common sense from it, but then again it's been pretty quiet on the Obamacare front lately, so I guess it's working fairly well.

Obamacare is never going to be enforced.

As long as the Democrats are in charge they will keep delaying major provisions like they have so far.

The moment the Republicans are in charge they will repeal it.

A recent Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that Obamacare continues to be widely misunderstood, with a majority of Americans unaware that the law allows consumers to choose between different private sector health plans. Lying about how the consumer protection standards would function, Frank said, created an unnecessary circus around a program that would help people get better coverage.

To be fair, the media kept reporting the ACA as "everyone has to buy Obamacare now", like it was a product in and of itself.

Not to say Obama didn't handle the whole thing less than optimally, but still. I do wish he was a lot more direct with what he and his policies are attempting to do.

Son, the Insurance Lobby runs the government.  They will never repeal the law that demands people purchase insurance.

The problem is that policy usually doesn't sound bite well. Imagine if he had actually said something like you suggest...there would still be a circus, it would just be a different circus while the media made the 1% of people who had catastrophic insurance coverage look like 50%. The fact is that certain groups hate the idea of state health insurance and they would found something, anything, to tar Obama with. And those people certainly haven't shown any compunction with lying.

Now does this mean I agree with what Obama said? No. But I understand the political calculus and I won't play a Barney Frank and second guess it.

To be fair, there is no provision in the text of the law that directly says that the insurance companies had to discontinue those policies. In fact, there is a section dedicated to grandfathering all policies that do not confirm to the new rules. The insurance companies did it by themselves, and in most cases, they provided additional policies to replace the ones that they dropped.

Obama could not anticipate this and had no way to force them to not drop the policies. Like someone said up thread, it is only a lie if the person willingly does not tell the truth.
