My mother's dog once got into a fight with a river otter and ended up with a large vet bill. Otters are just weasels who are perpetually pissed off about spending most of their lives soaking wet.

Ferrets stink. Otters do too, but at least they bathe constantly so it doesn't get too bad. Also, ferrets don't swim.

/and they're bad guys in redwall

Oh, man, this story takes me back.  In my pre-fark days, I wasted my time on a different news aggregator and there was a story of an otter attack with the phrase, "And then the otter attacked".  It's stuck with me ever since.  Goddamn otters.  Nothing but weasels of the river.

My 55 year old coworker who tragically died of a stroke just about a year ago, was a huge animal lover. She told me one of her favorite animals was the river otter. She also was unable to hear any story about bad things happening to any animal. Remember she told me she couldn't watch the movie Homeward Bound because even though it ended happily, she couldn't bear to see an animal in danger. I thus would not have shared this story with her. Miss you Karen. Rest in peace.

I suspect there might be something more to this story. Do otters usually attack unprovoked? Do they have "get away from my otter babies, biatch!" behaviors? Is it possible these people were doing things the otter perceived at threatening?

Otters are cute as hell, but they're still wild animals with big claws and teeth.

WTF are they going to kill it? It's not like they were swimming at a water park. You swim in nature, prepare for nature to deal with you for getting too close to home..

We kill animals that attack people. It's how we've gotten to the point that most animals don't.

They probably gave the otter unstackable cups. They hate that, apparently.

Hey, I cried when I read the ending to Rascal and do you know how Old Yeller turns out?  Very sad indeed, but I'm glad I read those books,

This thread needs more Otter Pops - how about 200 of them?

This has no bearing whatsoever on this thread but if you're a dick in life then I hope an otter kicks your ass.

Just what was the child doing before the otter whooped his ass?
Wild animals generally do not like being messed with and will get medieval on your ass.

Silly stupid people put themselves in a natural element.......be prepared to face what nature has to offer.

Nature sometimes bites. Deal with it.

Makes me sad that they think they have to kill a living creature for being itself in it's own environment.

Sorry but reality doesn't support your thesis.
Violence often solves lots of things.

Violence has solved more than anything else in history. Maybe not for the better, but it's by far the most popular solution.

How the hell do they catch the specific otter that attacked those people? Don't they all look the same? How do they know which one it was?

Did nobody read the article to where it said " they were swimming in a posted no swimming zone"? I wonder why it was posted a no swimming zone..... Maybe because it was an active otter breeding area???
