At least the loggers and traffickers are providing a service. What has this group of indigenous people ever done for society?

I read a sad story about a supposed "untouched by civilization" tribe that turned out to be the local homeless people whose primitive-but-not-*that*-primitive village had been wiped out by "civilization".

Where was that? Does that ring a bell?

There's just no great choices in these cases. I guess best case scenario is they'd be integrated into modern society...except they'd get sick and have culture shock, and let's face it, the world isn't wealthy enough to do it right. If governments just leave them alone, criminals will get them, like here.

Even if everyone leaves them alone, that's, what, countless generations enduring 35 year life spans with no progress and no dental or medical care besides a stone drill and flint knives? That's a despicable thing to condemn human beings to. These aren't an interesting variety of baboon.

Only solution is to give them a reality tv show.

There may have been a time when it would have been beneficial for more advanced colonial powers to leave less advanced isolated communities alone to develop in their own way, but that time passed a long time ago. The world isn't big enough anymore to pretend this is like finding an alien planet in Star Trek and if you don't interfere with these people they'll develop in parallel in continued isolation and someday find their own great, unique destiny. The fact is that modern life is very soon going to reach anybody who has somehow avoided it so far, and it's just a question of whether it's going to be nice or not so nice.

Funny, because I heard this song in my head:

Also, I'd like to complain that my browser didn't see any video to play, but one of those guys had a knife so apparently they have metallurgy technology or they've had contact with civilization before.

Wasn't that an American Dad episode?  No, wait, Richard Dreyfus was in it...  Ah, hell, I don't know.

You ever wonder if we are just an uncontacted tribe in a wilderness boundary area of the galaxy; some big empire knows we're here, but they'd rather not have the responsibility of sheltering us and bringing us up to their technological level, so they leave us alone?

Generally, all of these uncontacted tribes are not uncontacted because they've been living in the jungle in pristine ignorance of the outside world. They deliberately keep themselves uncontacted because most of them fled into the deepest parts of the jungle back in the early 20th century during the rubber boom, when native tribes were dying in droves from diseases and massacres by industrialized Brazilians. Conflicts with miners and farmers since haven't usually given them much incentive to come out.

Sgygus: This tribe understands steel machetes.  They're tainted.

Yeah, I've read about them before.

Obviously they're aware of the technology of the people outside, to some extend. And have chosen to withdraw as their land has been cut down or made unsafe.

The dude with the machete is king now, until the flu kills him.

/they actually had the flu prior to contacting the outside world as per the articles I read.

stuffy: So how long before the whole thing gets exposed as a fraud?

Why do you think it is a fraud? There are dozens of _known_ isolated tribes in the Brazilian jungles, and according to some estimations there may be hundreds of unknown groups.

No, I never wondered that.  But thanks a lot, now I am contemplating it.

It could make for a good or possibly terrible sci-fi movie.

That would make for a great band name.

Just to add some facts from wiki

On January 18, 2007, FUNAI reported that it had confirmed the presence of 67 uncontacted tribes in Brazil, up from 40 in 2005.[11] With this reported increase, Brazil has surpassed the island of New Guinea (divided between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea) as the region having the highest number of uncontacted tribes.

My balls crawled up my ass to stay warm. Now we come back and take one pair of pants and one metal shiny thing for wasting our time and stealing our mother farking bannanas.

Well, atleast one them took a pair of pants to cover what is left of his weathered string tied ding dong.

I am hesitant to say they have never had contact with outside civilization, being reclusive is a direct response to civilization, either European colonization or Imperialism at the hands of other Native American groups. They are aware of the world around them but choose to avoid it.

I think it's more likely that way back in the day some people secluded themselves and their progeny out in the jungle in order to save themselves from enslavement and destruction at the hands of the so called "civilization", and remained that way since. They have made the choice to be out of contact themselves.
