I consider pandas to be one of those quirks of evolution.

Everything about it appears to suggest that it's woefully unsuited for what it does. Its stomach isn't really designed to process plant matter particularly efficient, for instance.

However, the damn thing is so cute, humans spend massive amounts of money to make sure it survives.

Time for selective breeding of the rabbit-panda.

They have a ridiculously specific diet, no natural defenses, no camouflage, are fat and slow and are reluctant to mate. If they didn't look like a carnival prize and were some manner of lizard, man would have let them go extinct long ago. Darwin's getting pissed at your insolence.

My answer to the, "If you had enough money to do anything you wanted," question has always been, "I'd eat a panda."

/or do two chicks at the same time

Mugato: Darwin's getting pissed at your insolence.

Being cute is obviously a winning strategy. If Darwin is getting pissed he needs to read up on evolution.

But two important innovations allowed for recent successes in panda breeding. The first was artificial insemination, either with freshly collected or with frozen and thawed sperm. The process is now routine at panda breeding centers, both in China and abroad. Second, the care for newborn pandas has improved tremendously. A large proportion of neonatal deaths can be attributed to the intentional "discard" of one of two twins by a panda mother. More recently, however, husbandry techniques have been developed for the successful rearing of panda cubs by humans. In 2002, neonatal survival had increased to 71%.

This isn't a successful breeding program. It's more like a welfare programme for panda genes. We're desperately trying to keep these lazy, useless farkers alive because they look cute.

If rabbits bred like pandas, bunnies would soon be extinct.  (And Australian farmers would live
happily ever after.)
