What's the fair and balanced alternative to Fark?

Okay... how many of these sites can we shut down before the end of the day.

And by "we", I mean those on the Internet that have that particular bent.  I'm not saying anyone here would organize such a effort, or even participate in it.

Have they come up with a conservative alternative to reality yet? Because reality has a pretty strong liberal bias.

I once confounded a righty by saying we need a news channel as fair and balanced as Fox is, but fair and balanced to the left.

He sputtered something about how I just proved I don't even know what "fair and balanced" means.

He didn't get the joke, which spoke to the underlying reality:

The right regards Fox News as an example of "fair and balanced" journalism. Which tells us by deduction what conservatives mean when they cry like schoolgirls over "liberal bias." To the conservative mind, anything that isn't as biased for Republicans as Fox is "the liberal media." Anything that isn't  "comically distorted 24/7 far right propaganda" has a "liberal bias."

If it's not Republican propaganda, it's liberal bias!

Remember that the next time you hear a righty b*tch about "liberal bias in the media."

I doubt it.  Conservative comedy is sadistic while liberal comedy is masochistic.  Liberal comedy is about making fun of yourself or situations you're familiar with.  Conservative comedy is about making fun of caricatures or strawmen versions of other people without any personal experience or understanding driving it.  This is why even most conservatives can appreciate liberal humor because the situations it draws upon are grounded in real-life experiences, but liberals scratch their head at conservative humor because the caricatures it builds up bear no resemblance to anything anyone has ever actually seen.

I signed up for it and looked around a bit.  I saw several people with avatar icons of male asshole/dick pics, or piles of crap or humping dogs.  I figured I need to work on my persona and come up with some witticisms on par with the Algonquin Sewage Plant and planned on posting something a little later.  About 6 hours later I tried but it was shut down.  I felt kind of happy that some other folks had taken down that toxic shiathole.

Fast Moon: The Lone Gunman: That Onion alternative was about as painful as you might imagine.  I truly believe that quality conservative comedy is possible, but this sure as hell ain't it.

You can actually break it into two main problems for conservative comedy. The first is: nobody likes a bully. Comedy is largely subversive. You can only really be subversive by challenging powerful things or norms. Poop jokes are funny because they challenge social norms about sanitation, for example. If a black guy makes fun of white people he can be funny (though won't automatically be funny) because he is challenging traditional power structures of race. It's much harder to be a white guy making fun of black people because you aren't subverting anything. You're reinforcing your strength over others which makes you a bully and that just isn't comedy.

The other problem is, as you said, the caricatures conservatives use because of the the insular world they have built for themselves. We make fun of that  "shut up and PASS THE bacon" cartoon because it just doesn't make any sense. Michelle Obama is only considered a disgusting fatbody in the conservative echo chamber. Pretty much everyone else in the world recognizes her as being remarkably fit. Since good comedy relies on regular people recognizing what you say as true or insightful then humor based on the narrow world of conservative thought is doomed to either failure or very small audiences.

Not everything that The Onion writes is hilarious, but it's subversive and sharp.  It has some of the most biting satire out there.  It also has some of the most important satirical articles out there, and off the top of my head, two of the best are (I'm not going to get this exactly right because I don't like looking them up at the moment) "God holds press conference:  'What part of "Thou Shalt Not Kill" do you not understand?'" right after 9/11 and "Area Man Firm Believer In What He Believes The Constitution To Be".

As far as the "most of the time" comment, try writing that much comedy and having it all be brilliant.  Even a lot of Monty Python's sketches are mind-numbingly dull.

I am a person who is way too young to have seen the original seasons of SNL My Dad was huge into it back in the day. However, once the first seasons became available on DVD around 2005-2006, I realized something. The reason people think music and TV was better 30 years ago is because they only remember the good parts. Nostalgia is a biatch. A good chunk of SNL has always sucked....so my point is, a high failure rate with any entertainment enterprise is always normal

Yep.  I watched a bunch of early episodes when they had them on netflix recently that I had not seen in many years.   They weren't nearly as funny as I remembered them.  People just remember the gems, like Belushi as the samurai, Jane you ignorant slut, coneheads, etc.  They don't remember all the crap they were sandwiched between.  I'm kind of interested in to doing the same with some of the episodes during the Hartman/Carvey/Myers/Farley era.

Serious Black: What's the fair and balanced alternative to Fark?

Fark is an incoherent, chaotic mass of poes, trolls and fanatics and thus is its own alternative.  Don't like a Fark thread I suggest reading the same thread as an alternative.  When it comes to insulting one's view point or intelligence Fark is egalitarian.

I did not expect erudite discussion of comedy here. Agreed on the breakdown, comedy is a weapon only the left can wield.

I highly recommend Steve Martin's Born Standing Up if you appreciate analysis of comedy. His conception of humor and how hr breaks it down so meticulously is fascinating.

For those under 45 (like me) who only know Martin as the bumbling dad, that's, um, not what he did for most of his life.

On the bright side, for the personal information and price you get a promise in their user agreement that they will never monitor or sell your info. Granted, the user agreement also says that there is nothing preventing their advertisers (yes, the site has advertisers despite the $480 a year you pay them to use it) from monitoring or selling your info.
