NORML might've given a little push on reddit's /r/trees, so really, not that hard to explain. I'd like to think his target audience, geriatric kcitskcufs who would probably be helped by a little bit o' medicinal, actually widely support legalization, but I doubt that's the case.

My mom brought up the gang violence in Chicago the other day, oh isn't it terrible, etc.  "It's because they can get guns too easily."  I said no, they can get guns anyway, the problem is our stupid failed war on drugs.  We have gang violence over drugs for exactly the same reasons we had gang violence over booze when you were a kid.

"So are you in favor of legalizing marijuana?"

"Yes of course, it's senseless and the definition of counter-productive to put people in prison for something that is less harmful than alcohol."

"But if it were legal, more people would use it.  You would, for example!"

Sure, Mom.  Because I haven't changed in even the tiniest way in the past 25 years.  And even if I did, so what?  What business is it of yours, or anyone's?  You have a glass of wine sitting in front of you, should I bring some Mormons over to decry your moral failings?  Believe me, they have plenty to say on the subject.  Or maybe we should bring that up with your cardiologist, what do you suppose he would say?  What's that, you say you reserve the right to make your own decisions so long because you are the one who lives with the consequences, much like those cartons of Chesterfields you smoked for most of your adult life?  Well, there's a novel idea.

The marijuana thing really is a generational thing.  When enough of the Marijuana: Tool of the Devil crowd are gone, it will be legal.  And they're going fast, I think.

I really don't intend to start smoking the stuff again--I don't need to be any more woolly-minded than I already am*--but after that crack from her, I'll be sure to smoke at least one joint in her honor.

*If you're one of those "how DARE you question that marijuana is only pure and good and true and makes you smarter and stronger and better in every way, how DARE you," please do me this one eensy teensy favor and fark off, thanks.

Sanctimonious [blank] annoy the piss out of most everybody. Keep in mind that for decades pot smokers have put up with a lot of bullsh*t. They've been demonized, abused, fined, arrested, and incarcerated. And let's remember, marijuana is anti-spasmodic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-emetic. It's all natural, literally impossible to overdose on, and the side effects are few and minor. And this doesn't even touch its potential at treating cancer, which the research shows looks extraordinarily promising.

With all of this in mind, I cut them some slack. I can't blame them for feeling a little high and mighty as they watch the world catch up and learn the truth about the plant they've been enjoying safely and responsibly for decades. Besides, we've already got tobacco snobs, wine snobs, beer snobs, and every other kind of snob. Stands to reason weed would have theirs as well.

THIS.

As a 40 year old man, I have endured the entire Reagan-era BS about how Weed was just one step below crack cocaine, blared into my face for about 20 years now. Personally, I am glad that the country is starting to come around, but a lot of people have had their lives destroyed and ruined by our nonsensical drug policies. My father had his house raided unjustly (The police found no Marijuana or drugs whatsoever) and I have had a good friend incarcerated. So when I hear a guy like Kibbler complain about "Sanctimonious Potheads" who seem to bore him, he sounds awfully like guys in the 1970's who called Black people "Uppity".

I gotta say, those were highly incompetent cops to have done a drug raid and not brought along some supplies from the evidence locker. It was probably before asset forfeiture laws, so they weren't looking for a new car or house for the chief, then.

You're taking a stance against a strawman, and stereotyping people that smoke as potheads when you don't cast everyone that drinks several times a week as a drunk. Marijuana happens to be safer than alcohol and safer than virtually all drugs that induce a high; thus when "potheads" talk about marijuana being pretty safe they have a point, and not simply deeming it as a cure all. Those that attack something that pot smokers find therapeutic and harmless as a dangerous substance creates a strong reaction from many while pot remains illegal. So accept it.

Most that rail against so called potheads agree with their cause, but still reject something about their lifestyle, which is fine, but you're not helping by continuing to label pot users that adamantly defend their position as potheads. Pot users at this point are reacting to 30 years of fear mongering so they're going to go a little overboard on their arguments, but it's far less harmful than those authoritarian forces in government that want to criminalize the activities.

the weed crowd claims weed is much safer than alcohol.   they will both screw you up if you smoke/drink too much over a period of time.

they think weed is just a harmless giggle.  wrong.  to be safe about it, you have to have discipline and not smoke it all the time.  many do not have that discipline and smoke it every time they get their hands on it.  there is a point of diminishing returns if you smoke/drink too much or too often.  most don't understand that.

if weed and alcohol were harmless, i'd be toasted every fri, sat, and sun night.   hell, maybe even thurs night too.

but i can't make the rules/facts fit my wishes. i have to go with the science and the evidence.   i drink alcohol, but i limit it to one night (usually fri.) per week and i don't get smashed. i do get quite a good buzz, though.  and i never have a hangover or feel bad the next day.

that is being smart about it even though i know my body and mind would be better off without it.  alcohol is not a required. it's something i choose.

i think weed should be treated the same way, AS LONG AS,  people don't have this false assumption that weed is harmless and can't hurt you.  it most certainly can if abused.

As a drunk, living in Colorado, I can assure you weed absolutely is safer than alcohol. It isn't 'harmless' or without personal cost, but the societal costs of potheads is minimal compared to drunks.

Colorado's experiment with Cannabis legalization has been an overwhelming success. It isn't perfect and we still have work to do, but weed is absolutely better than alcohol for both individuals and society.

Do you think they cannot lead productive lives ?

Not sure what your point is, really.
