Why do motorcycle cops even NEED a shotgun? The rolling armory thing is supposed to be for squad cars, which can be locked up.

Well, now that someone other than the cops have it, it's a lot less likely to be used for criminal purposes.

This isn't as bad as when the kids discharged the shotgun mounted to a police motorcycle at least.

Yup, no farking way I give it back.  Let's just say the cops aren't known for showing gratitude to helpful civilians.

It is unclear if the shotgun was loaded.

If they didn't look like asshats before, they do now
Which makes them look like violent, racist, thug asshats.

because they have always looked like violent, racist, thugs.

personally i think we should arm the cops more...if they don't like like they're serving in iraq how will they give out speeding/parking tickets?

I'm thinking it's unlikely this particular shotgun will be found for a while.

2014-08-01 05:11:13 PM
Its just a shotgun no need to shut down the area for one, I am pretty sure there are more and better weapons  all over that area.
Bet that if a $1,000 "no questions asked" reward was offered the police would have it returned shortly.
That $1,000 would be cheaper than the overtime that is going to have to be paid.
Then the finder could buy another shotgun and still have money left over for a little party.

2014-08-01 05:11:45 PM
Here in Broward Co. FL, the Sheriff's Office no longer issues dept. weapons.  You want a shotgun in your car?  You buy it.  Your sidearm you need to buy also.  They have found that officer's who have their OWN gun will take care of better that if the dept. had issued it.

Really makes sense to me.

Unless the barrel is under 18", I don't think they will be getting it back. Even then, they aren't liable to get it back. It'll just go to someone who doesn't care if they are violating federal law.

I'm not aware of any shotguns used by police (at least non-swat) that aren't available to non-police. I'm sure the police have the serial number, but unless it's got a lot of weird modifications, it's not going to stand out very much is it?

So let me see if I've got this straight...Not only did this cop lose a farking firearm that was in his possession, but he doesn't even know if it was loaded or not? This guy should be fired, and his farking boss, too.

It's not as dangerous as you would think.  The guns are holstered to the bikes, with a special rack that locks them into place, and is also is supposed to block the trigger, so they can't be fired.  Biggest problem would be people farking with the weapon by doing stuff, like sticking gum up the barrel.

Though come to think of it, the article mentioned that the shotgun fell off, due to the rack being damaged.  My guess is that someone was trying to steal the gun off the bike, failed, but damaged the holstering system enough that it came off down the road.

No, that was the reporter who didn't know whether the shotgun was loaded. By "it is unclear", he means "it is unclear to me", not "nobody on Earth knows".

Or, he didn't do a proper inspection of his vehicle before departing the station. Sadly, neither of us has access to information to test these hypothesis.

Just an aside. How many people put a 3 point sling on their shotguns? Oops. Excuse me. How many people RUN a 3 point sling on their shotguns. Probably a lot more than those who run a 3 point sling on their M4s or AR15s.

That's not Watts.  That's the border of Exposition Park and Vermont Square.  Watts is further south and east.
