It was a repeat of several other instances - the fiscal cliff, Hurricane Sandy relief, agriculture and food stamp legislation, the October government shutdown - in which a group of conservatives dismantled Republican leaders' plans to address pressing issues.

"I was frustrated with the whole process, that's why I'm not sticking around, because here it is again, it's Groundhog Day,"

So another Pol who wants to do his job is frustrated by a dysfunctional Republican party's ongoing civil war and quits.

This does not bode well.

Once again, the South Jersey Republican saw a House vote on a critical issue scuttled by GOP infighting. House conservatives on Thursday morning rebelled against the Republican leadership as the GOP tried to pass a measure aimed at addressing the crisis of thousands of undocumented children who have come from Central America to the southern border.

There is a bright side.  I thought I would have the parasite known as Jim Gerlach representing my district forever.  But this year I'm getting a new parasite!  So exciting.

the saner republicans and the blue dog democrats should just spin off into their own party. a semi-sane center-right party that can tip the balance by siding with either of the two other sides and brokers deals.

The cycle of Groundhog Day was broken when Bill Murray's character stops being so self-centered and self-absorbed, and learns that true happiness and personal fulfillment come from turning one's focus outward in service and kindness to others.

I would suggest that this is also how the legislative cycle of the Republican House could also be broken, but I doubt the tea party wing of the party could ever reach that level of insight, maturity, and growth.

What he actually said was that the people of his district are tired of having an open border.  Translation:  The derp was not derpy enough, if we were blasting Messcan kids with armor-piercing rounds I would stay, but no, my stupid party can't even agree on that practical, commonsense, job-creating solution, so fark it I quit.

But he had to learn that lesson first by being a liar, thinking he is a god, stealing, and raping.

These people would go through all three of Scrooge's ghosts, and somehow get MORE self-centered, greedy and hateful.

I believe the creators of that movie indicated that Phil Conners spent 10,000 years in that cycle before he broke it.

I have no hopes for the GOP.

that would be another alternative. although the GOP marketing team has already labelled the democrats as exteme left (even though it is a center-right party) and the derpers are used to hating on them. If a new center right party was created from elements of both democrats and republicans, then the democrats could and should shift left. Derpers can continue to channel their derpy anger at them and it wouldn't be as irrational because the democrats could then be an actual left-leaning party. Sure, the derps may decide they can hate on two parties... but in the long term that may result in the other two sides being forced to lock them out of power.

Yes... I was actually shocked at how many articles and essays, good and long ones, there are about this movie.  Some guy calculated up just how long it would take to learn all the skills and knowledge it shows him displaying in the movie, and just those are like 200 years.  Harold Ramis did say what you said though, that in the original script, it has him stuck in that town for 10,000 years, even though it is never mentioned in the movie.

I'm assuming that actually doing something about the problem is a lot more effort than simply complaining about it. Snark is easy, action is hard.

I wanna make one called the New American Progressive party.  Just so we can use the acronym in a clever campaign slogan:

"Wake Up! Take a NAP!"

The original concept was 10K years, but the actual movie was 5-10 years according to Ramis.
