(Philly.com)   Worse case scenario: the Phillies will pay Cliff Lee over $45M to not throw a pitch through the 2015 season. That's some fine fiscal planning Lou   (philly.com) divider line 23

You should fire that guy. I'll not pitch for one percent of that.

Worse than what?

/they'll probably fix it and then I'll look stupid

I'll not pitch for 1 dollar less than that. Try and top that tough guy.

For 45 million, not only would I not throw a pitch, I won't even put on the uniform. Hell, I may never step foot into the ballpark either.

And this is why Texas didn't want to give him a 6th year on his contract when we were trying to resign him

Makes Nolan look pretty smart now, doesn't it?

Texas did give him a 6th year. They didn't want give him a 7th year.

Considering that the Rangers did give him a 6-year offer, and that I haven't seen any source that notes how Ryan was opposed to that (aside from being against all big contracts on general principle), I'm going to say no. No, it doesn't.

If he needs Tommy John surgery at his age, he might end up retiring on top of it.

Not everybody's Jamie Moyer.

Right. 7 not 6. I knew philly offered an extra year though.

I'm confused - I thought if a player got injured and missed a chunk of the season, teams had insurance to pay for that time, rather than having it come out of their payroll.

honestly, i feel bad for Ryan Howard.  Phillies made him play on a partially torn achilles.

I realize Lee had his reasons (beyond money) to choose the Phillies, but I do wonder if he regrets not coming back to the Rangers.

Aren't the Mets still paying Mo Vaughn and/or Bobby Bonilla?

2014-08-02 01:55:06 PM
Talk about a bad non-trade; the Phils need to blow up that roster sooner rather than later and get with the rebuild. And wasn't Doc Holliday pretty much d-o-n-e done after trying to come back from a similar injury?

/I know, they have a lot of money tied up in bad contracts which makes potential trades iffy

Pirates will take Burnett back if you cover most of his salary

Yep. It's too bad, since Cliff Lee is not only a damn good pitcher but one smooth badass. Even his (literally) "Fark it, I'm done" reaction right after the pitch when he felt it is typical Cliff.

I know that people have been saying this for decades now, but I really can't wrap my head around the money that baseball players make.  Superstar NFL contracts, star NHL and NBA contracts seem like regular lottery winnings, while MLB contracts are Powerball winnings.

/I'm not complaining ... I would rather hundreds of players share vast wealth rather than a few dozen billionaire owners.

for 0.9%, i will go so far as to not even come within 1000 miles of philadelphia.

The Phillies gave him probably $50M more than anyone else would have.  I don't feel too bad for the guy.

When you look and act like Cerano in Major League and when strike 3 comes in and you watch it go by, and you are the last out of the NLCS, and your team just lost, and you smile about it - no I don't feel bad for Ryan Howard at all.

When your batting average is 0.159, I don't feel bad for him at all.
