Things were bleak, but WWIII didn't happen. Of course it CAN happen; it can ALWAYS happen, but  pieces like these (which have been everywhere this year) are closer to cold reading than they are to political analysis

The current rash of "Is the End Nigh?" articles are for the most part click-bait speculation pieces that deserve the [youarenothelping] pic response.

I'm happy to see that even in 2014, there are still bloggers who think 9-point italicized font on a black background is a swell idea and quite readable.

Well, historically, August has been a slow month for news. Leads to publishers urging things to happen that don't need to happen. Expect Rupert to blow up a US battleship, just like he did to the Maine.

Step 1 to getting the US into a world war is to have a Democrat president
Step 2 is to be weak
Step 3 is to wait too long
Step 4 is to get our asses kicked
Step 5 is to beat the ever living shiat out of the Germans again

Global warfare isn't likely to happen until the risk of losing international trade is lesser than a perceived security threat or perceived gross imbalance of power for multiple nations.

The Golden Arches Theory is no longer 100% correct, but it still carries significant weight.

Thanks. I came here to say that. When the window opened, I closed it immediately.

Designers and bloggers - reverse font treatments are very difficult for people with any type of vision issues. It causes ghosting as well.

Blogger, WordPress, Drupal and Joomla all have tons upon tons of free themes. Readability is everything - unless you're posting Bolivian goat porn videos.

If anything I think we're surrounded by buffer points to prevent World War III.  What kind of powder keg are we really sitting on when we can't get the United States and Western Europe to agree on crippling sanctions against Russia for a stealth invasion of the Ukraine?

Everyone is too economically entangled these days to risk a significant war.  Imagine if we went to war with China.  In an instant, a trillion dollars of equity would disappear out of both countries.  It would be the 2008 housing crash, except with war.  And that's the same problem that you face with any two economic powers today.

So, as I see it, there are only two ways we'll find ourselves back around to a World War in our lifetimes.  The first would be a slow burn, where half the world gradually cuts economic ties with the other half as animosities gradually increased to a breaking point.  You'd need a perfect storm of complete economic isolation between at least two of the most powerful countries on the planet.  It's a tough sell.  The second way would be some slight, some injustice, some fark up that's so big, the governments of most major world powers could ignore the loud, expensive complaints from essentially every industry group involved in international trade, in order to essentially bankrupt themselves by attacking each other.  I don't know fark up could cause that to happen, but I imagine it might be about as bad as the war itself.

er they were just as tied up economically before the first world war, there was very nearly a financial meltdown only held of by the bank of England underwriting of lot of shiat. bizarrely there was still trade going on including the London markets insuring German assets even as the bullets and shells were flying.

No doubt we were tied, economically prior to World War I, but I doubt you could say we were just as tied economically.  We're in an entirely different universe of international trade today.  If anything, I think the economic shocks many countries felt during WWI are useful indicators to imagine what the effect on world economy would be when you magnify those shocks umpteen-fold.

I really cant see a proper world war erupting, even if the EU goes tits up Europe is still too closely aligned to go after each other.
China and Russia aren't closely enough aligned to combine forces and individually they would not be able to handle the trade disruption of going up against the EU and the United States.
Honestly we are just going to have this continued trend of bad state actors and the world against them. Russia is just the largest and most powerful of them but no nation, not even the United States can take on the whole world by itself.

What worries me is that it seems Vladimir Zhirinovsky is in the ear of Vladimir Putin.  Twenty years ago the man wanted to take back every piece of former Russian territory, Alaska included, and threatened WWIII if he was elected president.  Fortunately the people of Russia told him, "Nyet!"  When Crimea broke away, who was there?  Yep, Vladimir Zhirinovsky.  I hate citing from teh Wiki, but there's this tidbit from his entry:

At the film premiere of the film Taras Bulba in 2009 he stated: "Everyone who sees the film will understand that Russians and Ukrainians are one people - and that the enemy is from the West".[42] In February 2010 Zhirinovsky claimed that Eastern Ukraine would become part of Russia "in five years" claiming that "the population is largely Russian" and called President-elect of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych "basically Russian" (Yanukovych's father was an ethnic Polish-Belarusian, and his mother Russian)

You know we finally paid off the Spanish-American War. Or at least they took it off the phone bill recently. Bush was really onto something. A war without taxes and with a no coffin rule, like early evening reality television with commercials. jAnd everyone got to get new uniforms with brighter colors. Can't remember who we were fighting, but sure it had to do with oil or the right of gay corporations to marry.
