No lie, Manny Machado can play a mean third base. Now if he can work on the whole "being a little biatch" thing, he'll be set.

I don't know, it keeps things interesting having at least a few wildly combustible players in the league. I'm also disappointed he didn't charge the Angels dugout and attempt to fight them all because no one complimented him on his play.

Also, as far as I can tell, Machado had one week of giant douche behavior.  He's generally been alright other than that, right?

Maybe he's just allergic to the Athletics.

That, or his spirit animal is Milton Bradley and something with lunar phase and planet alignment was just right during that time.

Absolutely. I loved Nyjer Morgan's antics in 2011. It helped give the Brewers a spark and character. Fielder, on the other hand, fell apart. I want to see the same with Carlos Gomez (antics, not falling apart) in the second half of the season.

I was watching the Braves/Padres game the other day, and Simmons made another one of those amazing plays at shortstop. The announcer in the Padres booth exclaimed "Oh come on! He can't keep doing this, can he?"

Carlos Gomez is consistently one of the top 10 or so players in the NL.  Short of him taunting the fans like a WWE villain, you want him on your team.  And maybe even then.

Ditto Machado.  He's been getting grief for only being a league-average-ish bat, but a league-average-ish bat is worth a lot when it's attached to one of the best gloves in baseball at a reasonably important position.  Plus, he's 21 years old and only going to get better.

Finally, if Gomez and Machado had last names like "Rose" or "Gibson", the only press they would get is "they play the game to win", and "so gritty" and "competitive".

That's funny. Meanwhile, the Braves announcers treated it like a routine ground out. They get amazed when he DOESN'T make the play. He should've been on the All Star team.

Huh. I never considered this angle. Seems very strange to me. One of the things I love about baseball is that it is truly international and the intent is for the best players to play regardless of their background.

Hell, Ruth was an orphaned street ruffian.

I'll be honest.  My first thought was "why are you talking about the Bulls?"  Then I thought some more.

Speaking of MLB, can we just cancel the rest of the season and go straight to the A's vs. Tigers ALCS. Then I guess the winner plays the Dodgers in a quick World Series.

I like it simply because gifs tend to be well edited and videos tend to be stuffed with fluff.

Pujols, Gomez, machado and Fielder were all drafted by me this year so I am getting my ass kicked this year.

2014-08-01 05:48:16 PM
Well, that got closer to the fulfillment of Pujols being thrown out at first by a left-fielder; he was damn near in left field by the time he collected himself to throw that.

Hell, Pujols might get thrown out by an overzealous ballgirl at an away game sometime before his contract runs out.

/someone should make that 'shopped video instead of the stupid "catch of a baseball headed toward the camera" interviews

Yeah, it was close but the video illustrates the arm strength nonetheless.

Bream will forever be the exemplar for slowness. The cashier I had at Wegmans last week was the Sid Bream of cashiers; the waiter at the local tonight was the Sid Bream of waiters. So shall it be written.

Yeah his arm is better since this type of hit robbing play is routine for him, if he wasn't at SS we would be worse than the mets.

At least Benji was a catcher and they're expected to be slow. Not that Pujols was all that fast in his younger days, but sheesh...I think my out-of-shape fat ass could outrun Pujols now.

Yep. Machado is an absolute joy to watch day in and day out. I was surprised and disappointed in his behavior against the A's, but he's a kid and there's no reason to think we'll see that type of thing again. I guess haters gonna hate.

Jim Palmer says he's the best 3rd baseman he's seen since Brooks Robinson. No small praise considering the source. He's also hitting .356 over the last month. So...22 years old, incredible fielder, and his bat is heating up. Yeah, I'll take it.

PS - the O's have played 7 straight 1 run games and are 5-2 in that stretch. Plays like that go a long way in winning tight games.
