Smoking is an amazingly social thing. For some people it's the hardest part about giving up, losing the social aspect.

Yep.

I am an off and on smoker. Mostly limited to when I drink. I can smoke on saturday and not the rest of the week without much issue.

I should drop that too of course.

I'm pretty sure they can find a new circle of ex smoker friends where they can bray their smug, disdainful superiority at smokers.  In other news, the tobacco industry just got a free marketing focus study.

It takes until just the second sentence on foundations website to play the "for the children" card.

I don't think "targeting anti-smoking messages" to poor people is going to make them stop smoking. Most smokers KNOW that smoking is bad for them and kills them. They just don't care as much, because they are poor.

Smoking is bad. I don't want my kids doing it. If we could snap our fingers and tobacco was all gone the world would probably be a better place.

Smoking is addictive and the longer a habit goes on the harder it is to quit. It is a good thing to help prevent new smokers from starting and to help them quit before it gets harder.

Prohibition sucks though and doesn't work. I saw nothing in the website supporting prohibition.

Why are you so upset?

I quit as soon as the pee stick came back with a big ol' "YES +" on it back in April.

Which was good bc in the days leading up to that I began gagging and almost vomiting and unable to finish a cigarette. Haven't wanted one since (the smell now makes me queasy.)

Except last night. Had the crap scared out of me and back in the old days I would've gone on break and smoked 5 cigarettes. This time I had a Butterfinger. Not as satisfying. And I got heart burn :(

Don't think I'll pick it back up.

Smoking. Butterfingers are delicious.

You missed the part where there's no tobacco in it. Big tobacco hates vaping and I'm assuming is behind all the ridiculous restrictions on it. They're trying to get in on it but it's too little too late. Now they have a ton of competition where they had none before.

I've gone a little over 2 years without smoking or dipping. I still get cravings every now and again. I wish I never would have started, my gums and teeth are permanently farked. It's gotten to the point where I don't give in to temptation during my dreams, which is when I'm most vulnerable. It's a good feeling, but like I said, the cravings are still there, and probably always will be. Well, lesson learned I guess.

Where do you think the nicotine in e-cig juice comes from?

2014-08-01 06:35:00 AM

You'd turn it off when I was halfway across: Where do you think the nicotine in e-cig juice comes from?

It's extracted from tobacco but there's no tobacco in the e-cigs themselves. So a whole lot less of it is being used.

I'm looking to quit.  Any suggestions on ecigs or vaps would be appreciated.  I started to snuff out my cigarette out after a several puffs, now I would like to move on to something else.

Right, but it's still coming from big tobacco.

Why you think they're unhappy about having another delivery system for their produce I can't imagine, this could keep them going into the next century.

There's like a dozen articles about tobacco companies trying to buy up e-cig producers because their losing money on less tobacco demand.

2014-08-01 06:49:18 AM
I call bullshat on the "over 65 - 9%" stat.  I have been to bingo halls, and the clouds of smoke make the trashiest of bars look like greenhouses!

Also, the main point of the article seems to be "The dumber you are, the more likely you smoke" based on the education results.  Seems about right.  Millennials are smoking less than Generation X according to those results.

Lastly, I just cannot believe the stat that says only 18% of Americans smoke.  Less than 18% of the people I've ever met in my life DON'T smoke!  And one of the non-smokers uses chewing tobacco instead.  Then again, I live in SEC territory, so my numbers may not be typical.

I never said their was tobacco in it. The nicotine from e-cigs is still derived from tobacco. Big Tobacco companies are still growing tobacco to produce nicotine, but instead of grinding it up and rolling it in paper and selling it, they run the leaves through one of these:

i00.i.aliimg.com

This is a Supercritical CO2 Extraction Machine. It separates the various substances and chemicals found in tobacco and renders them into a liquid form.

Now tobacco has the highest concentration of any commercially viable source (there's some tree in Australia with a higher concentration, but it's probably guarded by poisonous attack koalas or something), much higher (as much as 3%) than any other members of the nicotine producing nightshade family, such as the eggplant or tomato.

I'm no expert. This is just what an hour or so of reading up on the subject has taught me. The fact that I can't seem to get a straight answer from any e-cig website on where they get their nicotine. Sure, they'll be happy to extol the virtues of their product, and tell you all about how their liquid form of super-addictive nicotine is far better than the smokable kind of super-addictive nicotine they've been selling for centuries.

But they won't say where their "better" nicotine comes from. Not as long as nicotine addicts are willing to hand them boatloads of money.

Who's supplying the nicotine? Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain ...

Nicotine is addictive but it's the hundreds of carcinogens in regular cigs that kill people. That and the fact that you're you know, inhaling smoke instead of water vapor into your lungs.

2014-08-01 06:55:38 AM
I am sure the evil tobacco companies are still evil but why is it an issue that they are providing nicotine to the e-cig companies. Is there a public health crisis around nicotine addiction?  Or do people just hate that the evil guys have figured out a way to continue to make money without killing people?

Less people will die of it, hopefully more people find a way to quit. That's a win.

Quit 4 years ago.  Since then, at least 6 friends have quit.  If I had known that would happen, I'd have quit way sooner.

You know, it's going to be pretty easy to kill somebody with the nicotine-mix for vapers.
It's a vasoconstrictor.... just trick someone into drinking something (hey, try this bitter shot!).
Then just leave a vaper starter kit on them and it's accidental suicide.

Once that happens a few times, then you edgy vaper-inhalers can kiss that escape attempt goodbye.

Go to a vape shop. Get a starter kit with maximum nicotine liquid. I haven't wanted a cigarette since.
