Watching stupid movies is of no danger to your mortality. And lots of smart people watch stupid movies to make fun of them.

I'm starting to question why Darwin hasn't taken you out by now.

I didn't see the first one so I was really worried I wouldn't be able to follow the plot, but I'm so glad watched it. The movie is easily one of mankind's finest achievements. True Detective and Fargo have got some SERIOUS competition for this year's Emmys.

I think making a movie so bad that it is good is just as difficult as making a good movie, which is just a different way of going about making a good movie. Although usually the ridiculous plot, terrible acting, low budget, and hilariously bad special effects are unintentional.

I like watching bad movies and making fun of them (MST3K, Rifftrax are huge in this area, and a bar I work at hosts weekly MST3K nights), but I feel that there's a difference between watching "normal" movies and making fun of them vs watching movies that are intentionally pants-shiattingly bad and making fun of them. It's the difference between mocking the guy who shiats his pants and doesn't know it vs. mocking the guy who shiats his pants every day because it gets him attention.

Not everything is going to be Casablanca or Gone With The Wind, I get that, but that shouldn't stop audiences from shaming people who just purposely make shiatty shiat shiat, or at the very least stop watching it. I wonder how many people who watch Sharknado also enjoy watching those crappy "Not Another Teen Movie" movies for their awfulness as well.

I watched a little bit of it -- no more than 15 min total -- while I was at work and was completely delighted. Would watch again, etc.

And thanks, Al & Matt, for playing along.

I wouldn't even call Sharknado a "bad" movie. It was intentionally over the top and more f a comedy than anything else and on that level it worked splendidly. Now Sharktapus vs Octodactyl, those are just bad movies that don't even try to be funny or outrageous. It's a fine line I guess.

Sharknado was designed to be watched and discussed on social media simultaneously. It was a television event. Pretty genius. I can't remember a non-live event that was able to attract an audience to hang out on social media and gawk together.

Eh.  You can have fun with Sharknado because you laugh at the absurdity of it.

The Movie movies are there just to make references.

There really  aredistinctions in bad movies, the same way there are distinctions in good ones (say, the difference between watching Caddyshack and Requiem for a Dream).  Some bad movies can be fun (Sharknado), others can be painful (Battlefield Earth).

But I think this right here:

Gunny Highway: Sharknado was designed to be watched and discussed on social media simultaneously. It was a television event. Pretty genius. I can't remember a non-live event that was able to attract an audience to hang out on social media and gawk together.

is a pretty spot-on observation.  Whether it was intentional or not, it got a lot of people together to do one thing.  That one thing just happened to be mocking how bad it was.  And everyone was having a great time at the expense of a project that existed to get mocked.  So, what's the problem?

I don't consider it "bad" though. They knew exactly what they were doing and in that context it was done very well. You wouldn't consider a successful parody film like Airplane! "bad" just because it's silly and over the top.
