Good point. The Union has never been more perfect and there's nothing wrong in the entire world. Nothing needs to be changed or done.

If you don't believe that government can do anything right why even involve yourself in the process? Find a hobby or something.

They don't seem to have a problem voting on whether to sue Obama over using the powers they gave his predecessor.

He didn't say that government couldn't do anything right. He said "the less THEY do the better" emphasis on "they" which would be the federal government.

Republicans are 100% fine with autocratic government rule if its done through the local state government... mostly because republicans have an easier time winning in state elections.

In fairness, I'm sure all the ceremonial "Monday is pray to Jesus day", "Tuesday is pray to conservative Chrisitian God day", "Wednesday is pray to creator of the universe only 6000 years ago day", etc. probably met with some resistance. Ceremonial 'laws' aren't just naming post offices. And really... how many more things can we name after St. Ronnie at this point?

I'm sure they could get a lot more of the ceremonial bills addressed if the Demonrats would stop their unilateral and unprecedented unwillingness to agree to the Reagan It Act which would serve to rename all existing and name any new official buildings, monuments, and projects after our finest president.

Let's just start fresh with new non-politicians in congress, we certainly can't do any worse with what we've got now.

2014-07-31 06:36:35 PM
The 'do nothing' portion would be the senate. As they are currently sitting on over 300 bills passed by the house.

Then again 'do nothing' to a liberal means 'won't rubber stamp liberal policies like the good old days before the 2010 election'.

Passing bills that has no chance of passing the senate is equal to doing nothing. I could produce 300 of those in 10 minutes.

Since the world is an entirely static entity i shall blithely recommend that it's positive that a ruling body of a superpower effectively puts on a puppet show.

Now, if we want to be clued in for second, we'll realize there is no way things aren't getting done. Things ARE getting done, by corporate entities without any public review, while at least 35% of the population enjoys the nice puppet show.

A do-nothing congress can't make things worse.  That's now Fartbongo's job and he is doing a bang up job of it.

2014-07-31 06:42:21 PM
Just a general reminder.

Congress doesn't just add new laws to make things more complicated/stupid, or more ceremonial post-office naming.

Any time the government has to Do Stuff, like decide what bills to pay (and how much to pay on them), it needs to pass a law. Then, the act of paying those bills is another law. They appoint judges to vacant seats - without these judges, the court system backs up. They appoint heads of government commissions and agencies, whose jobs are to run those agencies.

When Congress doesn't do its job, there's longer delays, less accomplished by leaderless agencies, and things that Were working are now grinding donw.

There are states that have term limits on their reps. What they find is that constantly sending new politicians results in reps who have no idea what they're doing.

Where are "symbolic" bills counted? - bills the house knows that would never make it past the Senate or President such as making the ACA illegal.

Actually Obama has done a lot to make things better. The ACA, killing Bin Laden, bringing the economy back from the cliff his predecessor left it driving towards.

Name one positive thing the GOP have managed to do in the last 6 years.

Post offices are going unnamed?

Either that or they are putting more into single bills, thus being more efficient.

I don't know or care which.  I have stated before that if I were in Congress, I would abstain from every one of these wastes of time.

The best part of the entire story seems to be getting the least (at least in this thread) attention.

In a last-minute twist, the House looked as though it might adjourn Thursday for August recess In a last-minute twist, the House looked as though it might adjourn Thursday for August recess

These mopes can't even get their shiat together enough to vote for a bill that their sworn enemy Fartbongo dislikes. That's a sad day all around for them.

That is at best half true.  To the extent that it is true, it's because Congress passed a law forcing itself to do that.

They appoint judges to vacant seats - without these judges, the court system backs up. They appoint heads of government commissions and agencies, whose jobs are to run those agencies.

TFA was specific to the House.  They don't do any of that.  Also, the Senate doesn't appoint, they approve of appointments.

Actually, the number of substantive bills is significanlty higher than I thought it would be.  It's not really that far from normal.  Quelle surprise indeed.

As for post offices...we're closing post offices and decreasing USPS employees.  I'm not saying that explains the lack of ceremonial bills entirely, but the author should definitely find a different ceremony to focus on.

If Reid actually had balls, he'd troll the crap out of Republicans.

Offer up a bill with anything the GOP wants - tax cuts, complete repeal of the ACA, loss of any gun restrictions, pork for the states, requiring the First Lady to wear a gorilla suit - it doesn't matter. Load that bill up with all the crazy crap that the opposition wants, with one condition: Abortion is legal and will be 100% covered by the federal government, no questions asked.

Then bring it to a vote and dare them to vote against it.

They can't do anything positive because the self annointed Tyrannical King and his minions haven't been willing to compromise on everything from day one of the New Muslin Kingdom. From what type of grease to cook Freedom Fries in, to what calibur of ammunion best keeps those brownskins (copyright NFL) from stealing people's lawn ornaments when the lawn needs cut. Pretty much. All you'd have to promise is that the bill would be given a chance to be voted on. Whether or not the President chooses to veto such a blatantly stupid bill is a completely different position.

I would bet that even with Reid's concession in the Senate, it would still fail in the House. There are enough culture warriors that would absolutely go apesh** at the very idea.
