I refuse to click on a livescience link, that site sucks ass, is the big news that there is a third hole, now, or are they going to do a 3 page story about how science has "proven" that vampires can't exist?

That reporter talking about holes made for a good 2 minutes.

Summary:  There are caverns of gas below the surface.  As the permafrost at the top of the cavern melts, the cover becomes thinner and eventually the gas erupts.

Because People in power are Stupid: It was just a giant zit that popped.

Yep.

There is a much older set of these holes in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.  The guess there is they could have been old hot springs that died a sudden, horrible death.

A sudden volcanic heating underneath a Pingo would have this "zit squeezing" effect.

This part of Siberia contains deep gas fields, and it also contains a lot of small lakes, which formed between 4,000 and 10,000 years ago when the climate was warmer, Romanovsky said.

Careful.  That's heresy.

I thought when the ice worms starting coming to the surface it meant the death stars had stopped falling and it was time for the The People to leave the Creche and head out into the world At Winters End...

And the clathrate gun fires... or not. Hopefully not. It's a LOT worse than it sounds. It's called a gun because once methane clathrates start breaking down it is a self-reinforcing cycle with no way to stop it. One time it didn't stop until the ocean was over 100°F on average and the methane decomposing fixed so much oxygen the seas turned anoxic and 96% of ocean species went extinct. The only surviving land animals were those adapted to high altitudes. And we also lost the trees, leaving very little to stop erosion.

Permafrost melting terrifies me. It is up there with nuclear war.

/ok with carnies though

Looks more like the hunting/trap slush hole of the hotheaded naked ice borer. I read about these fascinating creatures in the April 1995 issue of Discover Magazine.

Well it's never happened to him before, so I am sure Burt won't make the same mistake twice.
