Some Republicans believe the pope is "sounding like [President] Obama. [The pope] talks about equality - he actually used the term 'trickle-down economics,' which is politically charged," the GOP official said.

Well dear me, someone fetch my fainting couch. Too politically charged, you say? How about "Supply-side economics"? Or "Reaganomics"? Or how about "Retarded bullshiat that has never worked except to make rich people richer economics"?

Please, proceed...I'm sure that Catholics will forgive you. Oh, wait, that's Buddhists, and yeah, the Dalia Lama is also down about compassion and loving kindness too. I guess that isn't as sexy as the Prosperity Gospel, but keep it up. The more you make this about politics over faith, I'm sure that it won't have any backlash with the faithful. OK, maybe not Christian Fundamentalists, but there are more than just Protestants out there...

Cheesus Hairy Christmas, republicans have officially lost their Dog Gamned minds!  They can't just agree that helping the poor is a generally good thing, oh no, they have to inject their political dick waiving into it.

Idiots.

So it's not because he's Catholic, it's because he agrees with Obama. I wonder if my nation can ever recover from this descent into ignorance.

He's a place-holder feel good Pope. It's as though he were voted for by American Idol. Real Catholics go to pre-V2 churches.

I'm sure Republicans will do the same when Jesus comes back.

I always found it interesting how the US has this Christian-Catholic divide due to the extreme Protestant views of most founding religious sects. Any person with half a brain understands that Catholicism and Protestantism are both two large phyla of Christianity.

Not all protestants are fundamentalists. I'm Lutheran, and we like this pope (though we hate the idea of a pope in general). All I'm saying is, don't lump us all together. Most of my family fits the headline. I don't understand them.

Where's the fark atheist brigade screaming "GOOD!!!! ALL MENTION OF RELIGION IS BANNED FOREVER FROM EVERY PUBLIC PLACE BECAUSE WE DON'T KNOW WHAT "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" MEANS!!!!!!" ?

I mean, those assholes should be right on top of it. Maybe they're still pissing on some small town's nativity scene; it's almost August, they should move on by now.

Re-branding of one of the world's favourite brands couldn't have been an easy choice, and the world seems to be gulping it down, which must piss The Coca-Cola company off, considering their fiasco.

I like New Pope. (but it doesn't mean I think he was anything but a crowd-pleaser that was shoed in to turn around the public image, and that crowd is way too easily turned, considering the horrifying abuses of power up until this point.)

I'll agree that he has potential to actually make a difference, but the people he works for might not allow him to carry through his plans for reform.

I'ma need a bigger bag of popcorn, cos it feels like I'll be here a while to see if he actually has any real power to stop the evils of the RCC, or if he is actually just the frontman of the show, being allowed to cut deadweight, thus liquidating monies otherwise to be paid as wage, but not much more.

Since when is this true? The Whigs were the anti-Jackson party. The Republicans are the anti-abortion, gay marriage, and freedom party, and Democrats are the anti-Republican party. Don't even drag the Teatards into it, they make the right wingers look sane.

We've recent held a non-prayer rally where we worship nothingness and decided that instead of urinating on nativity scenes we should instead rape the figurines.  Needless to say this takes much more time and we just cannot devote the proper amount of hours to evangelizing our non-faith on the internet.  I won't even go into the fiberglass wounds that some of us have incurred. Lets just say that if infection sets in we may have some more martyrs to our cause.

I kind of like that post. It has a Flowers for Algernon feel to it. He knows just enough to know that he doesn't understand. He recognizes some of the pieces--atheists, the First Amendment, nativity scenes, the Pope--but has no idea how they relate to each other. He's crying out to strangers for help in putting the puzzle together. I picture him crouched with his head in his hands, bouncing up and down on his haunches in frustration, a confused jumble of diagrams futilely scrawled on the nearest wall, as the laptop displaying Fark casts a sickly glow across the basement.

I'd be just as happy if they did away with ALL legislative "resolutions" that are not law, have no function, and merely serve to give lip service to some person or thing that happens to be popular at the moment. Our legislators have more important things to do - like naming bridges and highways after themselves.

2014-07-31 06:42:43 AM
On trickle-down economics, the Pope wrote, "some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system. Meanwhile, the excluded are still waiting. To sustain a lifestyle which excludes others, or to sustain enthusiasm for that selfish ideal, a globalization of indifference has developed."

We can't have people spreading lies like this. Clearly, the poor LIKE being poor. How dare the Pope suggest we try to take their poverty away from them?

// what does "sacralized" mean?

To be fair, Boehner sent the Pope a letter formally inviting him to address Congress, and it's 90% nice. He couldn't resist a political dig or two, but on the whole it doesn't sound much different from the resolution that he's supposed to be blocking, so I'm not sure where the problem is.

I agree 100%. I think in this case it's not so much the government buddying up to a religious figure, as buddying up to a political one. The Pope has always been a huge influence, whether you're Catholic or not (I'm not).

Yup, one of the largest and most (historically) important protestant blocks is the Church of England, who are only extreme in the sense of their cake-baking and church-roof-repair-fund raising.

I think you missed the point. They didn't self-define themselves the Anti-Jackson Party, they defined themselves at Whigs. Republicans don't call themselves the Anti-Democrat Party, they call themselves as the Republican Party.

Titles have meaning and shape the discussion about a subject. Sometimes subtly, sometimes overtly. Look up the name of almost any bill in congress and it's title will invariably be Orwellian doublespeak compared to what's in the bill. The IRS isn't called Dept. Of Revenuers, Homeland Security isn't called Domestic Military Police, etc.

They just don't agree with him regarding the economics. The conflict between Protestantism and Cathoclism  is purely theological. These republicans are defending their business interests nothing more.

2014-07-31 07:13:35 AM
Interesting historical aside:

In 1307, King Philip IV, who was deeply in debt to them, had the Knights Templar rounded up and burned for heresy. In 2007, seven hundred years later, the Vatican released the Inquisition's documents about the matter from its Secret Archives and issued the Knights a partial pardon.

See, compassion really is the heart of religion if you take the long view.

Wait, that doesn't mean we should love and respect them as human beings even though we disagree with Republicans, does it?

That'd be wacky.

2014-07-31 07:14:35 AM
To be fair, most of the things the new Pope has done have been directly counter to everything the modern Republican party seems to represent.

Helping the poor? Check.
Treating everyone with compassion? Check.
Discouraging greed? Check.
Upholding morals? Check.
Reminding everyone what Jesus actually said about said things? Check.

Yeah, no wonder the GOP is afear'd of him.
