The new "Mummy" movie will be set in present day and will be more of a four-quadrant, family-friendly action-adventure tentpole than the dark scarefest that previous director Andy Muschetti envisioned after Len Wiseman left the project.

So in other words...not a real Universal horror flick.

Gulper Eel: ctrl+f "Rachel Weisz"

If not for my comment already killing the movie, I'd actually argue that that wasn't a dealbreaker for me.  Not that Rachel Weisz isn't hot as hell in the movies, but we barely knew her before the film.  They could easily find someone new we've never heard of to fill that outfit.

Kurtzman and his former writing partner Roberto Orci  worked on the screenplay

Of course they did.

Can anyone Hollywoodsplain that term to me?

Had to look it up myself, the four quadrants are male and female viewers, and above and below 25 years old.

That's what happens when we spend twenty years complaining about sequels.

Hollywood stops filming sequels, and instead just remakes the same movies over and over again.

To be fair, Hollywood made something like 8 different versions of the Wizard of Oz until they got it right, so it's not like this is a NEW thing.

Look at the top ten box office from last year and compare it to twenty years ago. Sequels and remakes dominate the list now.

I remember seeing the first one with Brendan Frasier.  Wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen (I watched a lot of MST3k).  Some of it was a reasonable re-imagining.  Probably shouldn't have made any sequels though.

2014-07-30 10:42:59 PM
I always thought the Brendan Frasier ones were "four-quadrant, family-friendly action-adventure tentpoles"

If you're going to remake it, why not make The Mummy the horror film it once was?

Wait. Is that not why they're doing? I thought the Fraser Mummy movie were great popcorn flicks. I'd watch more of those. Chris Pratt's probably going to be too in demand after Guardians of the Galaxy, but he'd be great in the lead role.

Slow clap...

The 1999 Mummy is great fun but the sequels are terrible. That stupid kid. Of course I love 20s 30s adventure, so I may be biased.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go pitch Mummynado to Asylum.

As has been explained many times, there are 'many' new movies being made every year that aren't remakes or reboots or sequels and they're almost all basically ignored by the masses.

Hell, one of the big things being said against the GotG movie was that none of the characters were 'KNOWN' to the audience and that the audiences wouldn't care as a result.

Name recognition is what draws people to movies, apparently.  That's why you see reboots, remakes and sequels.  Because, let's be honest: If the new Robo-cop movie had been named something else and the character names were different, no one would have cared about it.

I liked the second one well enough... and I usually hate cutesy-kid additions to movies. The third one was just pure desparation.

I loved the second one, and felt like it actually continued on the first. The third one, with Mario Bello, was a complete joke that self referenced itself way too much.

Because the advertisement for the remakes is taking up so much air time.  And the fact that shiat movies (Transformers 2-4) keep making stupid amounts of money.

What, you want original stories? The 10 highest grossing films of all time...

Gone with the wind 1939 - book
Avatar 2009 - originalish story
Star Wars 1977 - originalish story
Titanic 1997 - historical fiction
The Sound of Music 1965 - stage show - book
ET the Extra-Terrestrial 1982 - original story
The Ten Commandments 1956 - book
Doctor Zhivago 1965 - book
Jaws 1975 - book
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 1937 - folklore

Hence the ish. Its certainly an pretty clear amalgamation of several things, but it doesnt have a specific source material. I mean Taken and Finding Nemo, are pretty much the same story, but you wouldnt say Taken is based on Finding Nemo.

Nope. That woman got extra douchey writing Memnoch The Devil and hasn't really treated her fan base well over the years as her writing suffers more and more. She's not the great artist she's hyped to be, her novels were becoming hack feats before Memnoch. Unfortunately she is miles better than The Twilight author and I believe that's why she gets any remembrance at all. But if you want a good Treatment of the vampire look no further than her contemporary Tanith Lee, and if you want wierd supernatural, try Neil Gaiman and Storm Constantine. Rice is a product of publicity and she is best forgotten.

Sequel? Maybe Link and Lucy are totally civilized by now and have even dated, married, and gotten divorced. Then another earthquake and it turns out their entire tribe was frozen too! Hijinx ensue when Link's father and mother starts trying to assert their cave way of living into the lives of their thoroughly 21st century grandchildren. Everybody learns about family and friendship, and happy ending.

The Quest for Fire meets Meet the Fockers! It practically writes itself.

Not once, even while watching that movie, did I ever think this was an original... or even originalish movie. This was a work based off of other similar stories with just a new setting.  Star Wars is more original then Avatar. Saw Avatar in theaters opening day and while watching it, was thinking "Fern Galley in Space"... "Dances With Wolves retelling" and "Look at the new Space Pocahontas!" Had way to much fun making fun of that movie.
