Wow.  The guy didn't even know what chocolate was.  That's kinda sad.  You'd think they would have their own chocolate factory or something, even if most of it does get exported.

Well, they were right about the Whites being addicted to it.

I'm guessing that if they don't have chocolate, they probably also don't have PeopleofWalmart.com.

Except you can get a mild version of the effects of cocaine and heroin (opium) directly from the raw or processed plant.   Chocolate takes more ingredients and more processing to get the taste of the various versions of the finished product.

Their cocoa is the last thing they are tasting.  It is overwhelmed by butter, milk and sugar.  In fact, I doubt there's any cocoa in any American made chocolate.

Yep. Should have brought them unsweetened bakers chocolate. You would have read "We always figured white people were crazy, this just proves it".

Depends, read the label.

If it says chocolate, it by law must contain cocoa butter.  If it says chocolate flavored, it does not.

Ralph: This is dark chocolate. It comes all the way from Switzerland, Europe. That's near France, see. They call it 'bitter sweet.' Melts in your mouth.

Boss Spearman: You tried it?

Ralph: No.

Boss Spearman: How do you know it melts in your mouth?

Ralph: Well, truth is, we can't afford it ourselves.

Europeans made chocolate the confection as we know it today.  This guy has probably consumed it in the original, traditional ways only.  Probably healthier the old way.

Take WonderBread to a wheat farmer in France.
Take instant mashed potatoes to Chile.
Take E85 to sugar growers in Brazil (oh, wait...).

// shiat, you could make a whole series out of "take finished products to producers of raw materials, watch their reactions"

There's no butter in chocolate and milk is only in milk chocolate. Cocoa butter is the natural fat derived from the cocoa bean.

That's one way to tell cheap chocolate from the good stuff. If Cocoa powder and Cocoa butter are listed as separate ingredients, it's the cheep stuff. Good chocolate uses "chocolate liquor" which is the paste made from grinding the fresh beans. In the industrial processing, the butter is separated from the powder.

From this website:

We do know, however, that the Maya, who inhabited the same general area a thousand years later (from about 250-900 AD), did use chocolate. A lot. And not just internally. It is with the Maya that chocolate history really begins.
The cacao beans were used as currency. 10 beans would buy you a rabbit or a prostitute.

There are tons and tons of places in America that make chocolate that is up to 90% cocoa. They're everywhere.

Hershey's milk chocolate is about 11% cocoa. It doesn't really count as chocolate in my book.

Anything over 80% is pushing it for being edible on it's own (a bit too bitter) for me - I like to stay in the 60%-75% range.

Hershey's milk chocolate is about 11% cocoa. It doesn't really count as chocolate in my book.

And it doesn't even come close to being called chocolate in Europe (EU) which requires a minimum of 35% cocoa (if I'm not mistaken)

This got my attention too.
The guy is in the Ivory Coast with a chocolate bar in his pocket & it hasn't turned into a molten blob.
Is it made out of that stuff Walmart ice cream sandwiches are made of?

Thats silly. I'd just fark the rabbit and save myself the extra ten beans. A bean saved is a bean earned.

You're right. I should have said what we think of as chocolate. It was drank as a hot bitter beverage. Sugar wasn't added until it made it's way back to Europe.

I did like their reactions to it and at the end when they thought they were out and he took out another bar. It is kinda sad they have never had it before and I hope it was the good stuff. And that they never knew what it was used for was odd as well  and thinking that it was used it wine, there is a chocolate wine though.

Very true, but back then neither did my ancestors.  My ancestors didn't even know that plant existed.  You'd think these days word would travel, even to the third world.
