That's neat, yet old. Most of the Minnesota ones are shutdown now.

Only Valley Hi is really open in the twin cities.

I've been past Hulls (#7) numerous times but have never been able to plan my trip so as to catch a showing.

The drive-in of my youth is now a Wal-Mart and a Costco.

Sadly, these days, there are less than 400. But, there are a few in the suburbs of Akron, OH and one in Clearfield, PA, so I've got a few around me yet.

Some of my best memories from childhood are the summer nights at the drive-in: a six pack of Grape Crush and Coke in glass bottles, popcorn covered in salt & butter from a big tub we'd brought with us, and a triple-bill with at least one War in the Stars or Burt Reynolds movie..

/mmm, Sally Field bum

One of our local drive ins used to show porn exclusively. That stopped long before I ever went, but I do wonder about the logistics of that.

Playing stinkfinger in the back seat.

Memories!

One of the last drive-ins in Oregon, the 99W in Newberg, got lucky in an equipment lottery and won a digital projector. Three generations and 61 years. They still show a copy of the original 'visit the snackbar' video.

One of the ones here locally did that too for a few years before it closed up.

/place was surrounded by trees, so there was no free shows from outside the fence

Really old. I grew up near the 65 HI Drive-in and that has been closed for well over a decade. It became cookie cutter housing.

The Bengies was the haunt of my youth, then in college i worked briefly at Sidney Lust's Beltsville Drive In, where they showed XXX films ( this was during the time of the Maryland Censor Board so there was no male genitalia or penetration shown ).

and not so CSB....because of our local drive in, I learned I was claustrophobic.  We were planning the "sneak people in the trunk into the movies" thing, so we did a test run to see how many we could fit in the trunk of a buddy's Ford LTD.  I volunteered along with five others, we hopped into the trunk, laughing and having a good time and then they closed the lid.....and I flipped the FARK out!!!  They couldn't open the deck lid fast enough for me....

/somewhat better about it now some 30 years later, but still avoid confined spaces as much as possible

Pants full of macaroni!!: Several still active in Ohio.  None of them mentioned in TFA, o' course.

I went to the one in Straussburg, OH. Between people having their headlights on while facing us, the dimness of the screen, the fog that rolled in, and the asshole who left by spinning out and throwing mud on us (on purpose) it was a great experience....

IIRC, I only went to one when I was a kid.  I would love to take a date to one now, but the backseat of my Jeep is too damn small...said date would have to be a midget if we are going to get our swerve-on.

Surprised the Starlight Six in Atlanta wasn't listed. It's in da 'hood, but it truly is a unique experience.

I'm kind of surprised the one just west of St. Charles, IL isn't on the list.

It's true old-school, looks just like the ones in the 60s and 70s used to.

From that site : "On an UP note:  5 of these were built or revived in the past four years, and
the next .. a new twin-screen Drive-in (Lubbock) will be lit in July of 2003.  "

Going to go out on a limb and say that list may not be updated very often... It is nice to see someone keeping the nostalgia alive, though

We have one not far from Allentown, PA that is pretty good, Becky's I think, my kid's love it and I've enjoyed the movies I've seen there.

2014-07-30 02:31:27 PM
Every summer here they have a "pop up drive in" in the parking lot of one of the malls. They roll a flatbed with a screen in, and show classics from 70s and 80s.

What about laying a blanket down? A jeep is an SUV and allowed in the back row.

Suck it, car owners.

Yeah, still some around Dayton.  Dixie's still open, and the Skyborn (which use to show porn - was surrounded by big corrugated steel panels).  Melody 49 is still out in Brookville.

The best one closed a few years ago - the Park Layne in New Carlisle was bought by one of the local churches, who razed it for their new building.  It was right across the street from a diner called the Mel-O-Dee.  My wife and I would get a mess of chicken from the Mel-O-Dee and go over to the show.  The church was cool when they first bought it.  Before they had to tear it down for the new building, they had free movies there over the one summer.  Showed family oriented stuff like Horton Hears a Who and it was free (canned food donation encouraged).  They even gave you free popcorn!

The old days:
Sherwood Twin
North Star
Salem
Belmont
Captain Kidd
Southland 75
Sunset
Skyline

Movie Manor in Colorado is a hotel facing the screen. They pipe the audio into your room and you can watch from the comfort and convenience of the room.
It's kind of a fun destination.

I live in Western NY within a half hour drive of two drive-ins! Too bad it's been really rainy this summer.

2014-07-30 02:52:24 PM
We go to the drive in near us once or twice every year. It's kind of a drive, but it's fun to pack a dinner and sit in the truck bed for a double showing.

It's kind of in the middle of nowhere, so we deal with the usual rednecks the area draws. It's worth it for the experience though. I hope it stays open long enough for my kids to enjoy it someday.

I heard there used to be a drive-in on Big Sky Drive in Madison, Wisconsin that showed porn films.  The entertaining/problem was that you could see the screen from the highway, so during some of the better scenes the traffic used to stop on the road.

I am way to young to confirm this story, but I know there are some elder FARKERS that could confirm/deny this.

It still packs them in too.  It was about 2 hours before sun down and there was a line about 1/4 mile long the other day.

Don't worry. There will be drive-ins even if the power goes out. And suddenly the chicks will want to watch Evil Dead 2 with you instead of that shiat where the chick and the guy who hate each other within the first minute of the movie will, obviously, laugh with each other and hook up by the end of the movie.

Lived in Milford, NH from 1968-74. Went to the Milford Drive-In. They showed X-rated porn back in the day. Still there and in business.

Worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard* in the 80's. Went to the Sacco Drive-In. Still there and in business.

*= The Brig destination in the movie 'The Last Detail' was on the back side of the island where the shipyard is located.
It was closed when the movie was made.

The Skyview Twin in Belleville Illinois (suburban St. Louis) got digital equipment two years ago. Much much better viewing and even an improvement in sound.

Don't knock it 'til you've tried it.

There are a couple around here. It's nice for families with children. You can bring dinner lawn chairs, a nice radio, your own food and smuggle in beer. The protection quality is much better than when I was a kid, with digital projection and all. We'll go a few times each summer.

A blanket would add comfort, but the space is still too small.
