Alex Trebec did excellently. It is way better to do it exactly as he did then to mumble. Or whatever. My respect for him grew for that. That is how people learn a foreign language.... when there is a sound not in the language learner's first language, it helps so much to do exactly what Alex did to make the sound slow and deliberately overenunciated. I do that frequently to help people learn English when I travel. And I appreciate it when the favor is returned to me when I'm picking up new words in the language of the country I'm travelling to.

Here's a supercut of Alex Trebek pronouncing and enunciating words.

Yes, how awful it is to speak a language correctly, rather than the "popular" way.  It's simular to preferring "li-brary" to "li-berry" or "nuclear" to "nuculer".

Mrs.Sharpier: That is his job.

Oh sorry. That wasn't stated in the form of a question.

My mother in law drives me nuts when she pronounces "usually" as "use you all ee".

Damn elitist, pronouncing words correctly so the contestants can properly understand him and play the game as it was meant to be played.

Tomorrow I'm making a supercut of Spelling Bee judges pompously telling the country of origin to contestants in an effort to help a non native speaker understand their prompt and ensure a fair competition.

It'll be outrageous!

As a geneticist, I once got a kick out of Trebek wildly mispronouncing the word "alleles".

One Jeopardy featured a native French speaker (not Quebecois but real French) who answered a question with "la bastee".  Cameras stopped recording, they cut away and then came back.

I wonder if the French guy angrily told off Trebek in filthy French for questioning his pronunciation of La Bastille.

The thing about Trebek is he thinks he's a professor or some shiat. No dude, you host a game show, you read off a teleprompter, you're not an academic. It's like if Pat Sajak thought he was a legitimate cryptographer or if Chuck Woolery thought he was a licensed marriage counselor.

2014-07-30 01:46:25 PM
I leaned a new word today. Actually I learned a new meaning for an old word. "Supercut". It is not just a place to get a cheap and unpretentious haircut, it is a bunch of 2 second clips "spliced" together.

Happy day!

He's just trying to learn you stupid americans how you are supposed to pronounce words, not how your backwoods aunt would read it off of a McD's coaster!

The had a category once that was 'Things You Can Order at Domino's Pizza,' and he still managed to be pompous when reading the answers.

Imagine how much crap he gets if he doesn't pronounce things perfectly.

This.  He isn't being pompous.  His job is to read "answers" in a clear manner so that the contestants can understand and respond quickly.  His job is not to accurately pronounce thousands of words as if he is a native speaker in every language. He isn't being pompous, he's doing his job well.

I guess people think a montage refers specifically to a sequence of scenes in a movie or tv show, e.g. a training sequence, that shows the passage of time and also functions as a music video for the anthemic rock song that's played over it.

He's also supposed to be teaching young viewers the importance of respecting language by treating it right. I learned a lot from watching Jeopardy when I was a young doofus.

Calm down folks.

A supercut is a type of montage, just like a square is a type of rectangle.

It doesn't mean you are obsolete. Everyone's lawn is just fine.

At least they don't have to subtitle him like they do on those redneck shows.

Trebek is Canadianese which automatically makes him a pamplemousse francophone ass.

plus, he gets most of those pronunciations wrong.

Still better than Aardrdrdrdrohen Sanchez from the Food Network.  Dude is trying so hard to reinforce his ethnicity.  Actual Mexicans don't speak in such ridiculously stilted and over-enunciated tones.

Dude's a major tryhard, and he doesn't need to be.

It's always bothered me to hear non French people pronounce French words with a bad French accent. I suspect that the French don't lower themselves to pronouncing English words in a Dick Van Dyke style cockney accent.
