So people actually get paid for writing articles like this?

Sounds like whoever inexplicably got paid to write that article is whining because it hit too close to home. Of course stupid people are breeding more than educated people. What's cruel about observing a simple truth?

I got as far as this and regretted giving TFA a click:

The origin story for Idiocracy's future world of half-wits is that uneducated people in the early 2000s are having kids and smart people don't reproduce enough. It's clear from the film that the intelligent people are wealthy, while the uneducated people are poor. So we're starting from a position of believing that wealthy people are inherently more intelligent and, by extension, deserve their wealth.

It's almost as if whoever wrote TFA cannot distinguish cause from effect.

This article would have been trendy 10 years ago.

Maybe the article is missing the point -- the people in the movie were poor BECAUSE they weren't very bright.

I'm sure there are some brilliant poor people out there, and there are numerous stupid rich people (Donald Trump), but the film was only 90 minutes long.  They had to lay down the premise and move along.

When I have a conversation with someone who puts a zinger out there and after a few minutes I come up up with a reply but hold it in because it would have only been funny off the cuff, without missing a beat so to speak. This article is that reply that no one is gonna laugh at

Can a sentence be a run-on and a fragment at the same time?

So much going on there, but you never concluded the 'when'.

Can we get a grammar nazi to sort this out?

Dog Welder: Maybe the article is missing the point -- the people in the movie were poor BECAUSE they weren't very bright.

And the solution wasn't "Do what Luke Wilson says (use water, not Brawndo), because he's smarter", it was "Do what Luke Wilson said because it's correct". Doesn't the end narration say something to the effect of "It wasn't perfect, but it was a fine start"?

Nobody was intellectually curious enough to question Brawndo's claims. Nobody was intellectually curious enough to wonder who's ass it was and why it was farting. Nobody was intellectually curious enough to learn what the medical machine did and why (or intellectually curious enough to read about Hepatitises A-H). Nobody bothered listening to what Luke Wilson had to say - preferring to make fun of him - until they heard about his brains.

THAT's the commentary. If you're going to be stupid, at least have the decency not to ingrain stupid as a cultural value or to foist your stupidity off on others.

Of course the thing to note is that educated is not an exact synonym for intelligent. As long as you have a solid free educational system the problems in the movie aren't going to be an issue. If you have a class system where only the children of the middle class and better get a decent education, and low social/economic mobility, then you can have the problems envisaged.

The article claims the movie is blaming the poor, but clearly, it's blaming the rich. It's saying education doesn't necessarily equal real intelligence.

Now, if you wanted to make the case that this film is laying blame at feminism, you might be on to something, because it is doing that.

I think we may have a problem, then.

The blogger apparently doesn't get out in the real world, thus thinks the references are new, and made by only millenials.

It's a sad thing, that.

I would also. Terry Crews is hilarious. I am also still waiting on Black Dynamite 2 :)

Idiocracy is so stupid the first time you watch it I can see why people didnt like it. So glad I watched it a second time because there is tons of comedy gold in it.

This. They pretty clearly laid out why it happened - the successful (educated) thought about the consequences and waited while the poor didn't.

I'm not sure is the Quiverfull movement was known at the time the movie was made but I'll guess the future is going to be idiots and Christian Dominionists.
