They can't just redirect the flow of millions of gallons of water moving through pipes almost 100 years old. It takes time to shift the pressure.

The college I went to built a very nice sidewalk/sitting area/palm tree planter over the water main shut off valve leading to 3 dorms, I guess the theory was each dorm had its own shut off valve.  When the 100 year old main collapsed they were out there digging all morning to shut it off.

This was one of the main pipelines in the area (36" water main is pretty large).  Couple that with the old cast iron pipe and the very likely chance that most of the water valves needed to isolate this bad section probably didn't work due to the lack of exercise.

i don't really know much about the internet but what does all this mean anyway?

what's a "fark link"? it says the link was on youtube? is he talking about where when you click it the link actually goes to fark/goto/ and a bunch of random stuff? why exactly is that bad or not bad anyway?

what is an edgeblock?

i thought DNS was pretty much a distributed thing, is he saying he wants to block fark for people who use his ISP or something like that? or that he can ban it from DNS in general without oversight just cause he's mad about it?

just curious really, cheers

I think I understand.  You must be the on-call guy for the site the story is on.  (for everyone else: fark linked to his site, killed his servers and woke him up.  They must have special stories they peg for high traffic, and hide them behind content delivery networks)

Sorry bro, but there is little you can do to stop folks from linking to your site, besides cache everything approach.  Mayhaps you want to try rewrite rules that are triggered on high traffic (maybe your monitoring can copy them into place, restart apache, once triggered:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !www.example.com [NC]
RewriteRule  \.(gif|jpg|png)$ http://other.example.com/image.gif [R,NC]

Or setting up nginx to have farked pages go to low priority.

Good luck.

chevydeuce: Google "water hammer".....

Shutting down this pipeline to keep water hammer at a minimum only takes about 10 minutes or so.  I imagine that the rest of the time was trying to find the 25 valves it took to isolate this section of pipeline and trying to get 1/2 of those to completely shut off.  Sounds like they are still having major problems trying to get several of the valves completely shut off.

Maybe this will help remind the water operations staff on why it is important to exercise your isolation valves on a regular basis.
