Great. Now he'll get to coach a whole new generation of inoffensive, milquetoast comedians.

It goes well that an unfunny comedian would be a mentor to a cast of unfunny comics.  Like Seinfeld.

The funniest thing about Jay Leno critics is that they still think Conan O'Brien was actually funnier....

Why don't they just give him an actual car show???

Seinfeld was never funny but he had a sitcom where he surrounded himself with funny people.

Maybe he could ride around with other comedians. Get breakfast or something.

You say "workaholic", I say "attention whore". The guy is the male equivalent of Joan Rivers, he will never allow himself to fade into obscurity.

He kept doing stand up year round during the Tonight Show years.  He uses the stand up money for the cars.  It's an agreement with his wife.

Leno is a hard worker, regardless of the rest of his behavior.

While I know it's against fark policy to like anything that had mainstream success, Seinfeld was funny. His comedy filled the gap left by the Johnny Carson, Bob Hope types. And he was definitely one of the best of the 80s Carolines/Improv scene.

Not edgy or provacative, but enjoyable in the way a peanut butter sandwich is enjoyable. Sure, you'd rather have a steak, but it's nothing to complain about.

Jay Leno is like a shark.  If he stops doing comedy or TV projects, he very well may drop dead.  It is what keeps him going and getting up and putting on clean denim each morning.

He was really the first big break for observational comedy. Not that it didn't exist before, but he broke through making the mundane funny. Tons of comedians have built on that since.

From what Jay has said, he doesn't want to do a car show because it would be television. He enjoys cars because they aren't a job, they aren't television.

Isn't that sort of not true since he has an online series called "jay lenos garage?" I mean he sits and talks about cars during the whole thing?

Yeah, but it's not on television. It's just kind of part of his hobby. There's no big format to it or anything. Even when he's talking about the cars he doesn't have much to say.

I thought the stand-up money paid for everything (doesn't he do something like over 100 shows a year) and the tonight show money was all saved in the bank (not sure for what, they don't have any kids).

That said Leno seems like the kind of guy who was pretty funny at one time but when he got the tonight show he sort of dialed it back/sold out a bit and made his humour as bland/inoffensive/obvious as possible so that he could be number one. It supports what I have read that he was totally and NBC company man and pretty much showed up for anything whenever he was asked (shareholders meetings, network events...). Hell even Letterman has said that at one time Jay Leno was the funniest comedian he ever saw.

I'm too young to have gotten to see Jay Leno's stand up in his prime, before the Tonight Show, but the one common thing I've heard from all the older comedians I respect - ones that I would neeeever expect to like him - is that Jay was one of the greatest stand ups of all time.

That would be David Letterman, who's said it numerous times.

Also Chris Rock, Artie Lange, Louis CK, Howard Stern (not technically a comedian, but he loathes Jay and still admits this), Norm Macdonald...

Which kind of makes sense. I remember years ago watching the Jerry Seinfeld documentary Comedian. And the one thing I took away from it was how much work it is being a successful comic (working out bits, trying out different sets and just figuring out what is funny and why it works). Everything I have read is that Jay is a crazy workaholic so if he was like that in his stand up days that would be a bit part of his success.

Leno's just too insecure to not be in front of an audience.

I think Letterman will go the way of Johnny Carson; he'll retire and you'll never see him in front of a camera voluntarily again.

2014-07-30 11:50:41 AM
Let's just say this: using the word "unfunny" or "x comedian has never been funny" makes you seem like a contrarian, humorless jackwagon.

Some of Leno's best Tonight Show monologues were during the writers strike when which he wrote most of his own jokes.

HAHAHHA!!  My thoughts exactly.  The bullshiat "Team Coco" still can't get over it.

Conan used to be cool, but his (and his "followers") endless campaign to slag Jay at any chance has removed his cool factor.  Give it up already.

Really TBS a channel that's included in every basic cable package is a channel no one watches? News to me. Oh BTW at least Conan is actually employed as opposed to Big Jaw who lost his job to Jimmy freaking Fallon and is getting more buzz and popularity than he ever did in 20+ years.

I love how Leno nuthuggers like you try to make him a martyr because poor Jay the guy who agreed in 2004 to leave wouldn't leave and really wasn't the jerk in the whole situation even though he could have had the power to stop the situation at any time. No you blame Conan and his fans as the real reason for what happened. You must be a freaking joy at parties.
