Wow... Denny just got hisself farked up the tailpipe with a roto-rooter, thanks to his crew chief and car chief (and I imagine Joe Gibbs had a nice long talk with both of them, where he brought up their future with his operation).

TFA seems a little vague and iffy about the actual violations, isn't it?

/that harsh a penalty for what basically sounds like a procedural violation?

The Twitter-verse is abuzz with all this -

@nascarcasm

JGR finished 2-3-4 at the Brickyard. Sounds like they may earn a P5 as well.

All you need to know about a P5 penalty is that it could easily make Joe Gibbs use the F-word.

Maybe Carl will bring his Scott's Lawn Care sponsorship over JGR - apparently they're having an issue with Grubbs.

A weekend off. Then work one weekend. Then six more weekends off. I want Darian Grubb's job.

Hamlin's still in the Chase. Would suck for him to lose Chase spot over something he didn't know about. Wait...what'd you say, Martin Truex?

"Wow - that is one massive penalty!" #ThingsYouDontHearWhenDiscussingTheNFL

Darian Grubb will be back for Chicagoland. And can grow a thick, long, rugged playoff beard in the privacy of his own home.

@NASCAR_Wonka

Carl Edwards asked if he should just put his stuff in Darian Grubb's office for awhile.

Penalties are set by how many words are in the part. For example, "rear firewall block-off plate" has 5 words, so it's a P5.

"Who won Talladega again? See you guys in the Chase. I'm goin' fishing. ✌" -- Darian Grubb

First time in awhile Chad and Jimmie aren't the ones being penalized.

This drops Denny from 11th to 21st in points. Under this old format, this probably would've sunk his season. Under the new format, he doesn't even move a spot (my post in the plane thread was incorrect.. forgot to carry the 1), though now he is only -1- point ahead of Almirola for 9th in the Chase.

I hate NASCAR points system this year.

"close" is pretty irrelevant in the current Chase format

Another way of looking at it, Grubb did work for The Chad, so maybe he tried to be like his mentor and failed to pay the necessary amount of bribe money to the officials.

Grubb's mistake was not having Cardboard Cutout Chad handy to take the fall.

/I miss that NASFARK meme

I'm surprised at the lack of "Fed-Ex car delivers!" From announcers.

They should make any point deductions effective from the start of the chase.  That way they would really pack a punch instead of being no big deal for a race winner.  They still get the benefits of the win and qualifying for the chase, but then have a serious uphill climb to get out of the first round under the newest idiotic format.  Can someone remind me again why this manufactured playoff is better than the old system?

So I was asking a buddy with some race engineering background about the implications of a firewall letting air in.  His response was something along the lines of "Could add an extra 30 pounds of downforce, maybe more, likely a bit less."  Taking him at his word, that's not exactly a small amount.  I can see the high penalty if that's the case.

Well, it didn't affect Denny's Chase seeding despite him dropping 10 positions in the standing, but here's an interesting tidbit: Had it been Kurt, it... still wouldn't have affected his position, but it would've dropped him to 29th in the points (right behind Danica). If you don't finish at least 30th in points, you don't make the Chase, regardless of wins.

"Close" is "would have made it into the Chase".

Because it was not 'procedural'.  The change supposedly gave them an extra 30 or so pounds of downforce and that would be a significant competitive advantage.
