Somebody explain to me in clear, short American English how the transfer fee works?

MFAWG: Somebody explain to me in clear, short American English how the transfer fee works?

Short answer 1: Team B wants a player from Team A. Team A determines a price for that player. Team B agrees to pay that price. Team B only pays that price if player signs new contract with Team B.

- or -

Short answer 2: Team A offers player at a minimum price. Team B offers to pay for that player at the requested price. If player agrees to play for team B and signs a contract, Team A gets the money.

Long answer: well, here's an attempt to explain it.

Like the Red Sox trading Babe Ruth for cash, but if the Yankees only had to pay said cash if they could sign Ruth to a new contract

/I guess

And the deal can be cancelled if the player is found to be hurt during a medical. Which just happened to Liverpool when they tried to sign Loic Remy a few days ago.

OK, I referenced this in the boring soccer thread for today but here's the news:

Shamelessly stealing (with permission) the great NFL Survey of Fandom from Di Atribe, I am creating a similar survey that is tentatively called the "Fark Association Football Fandom Survey."

In it, we will have questions such as:

- Name your favorite football club in the world?
- Which club do you hate the most?
- Who's the best player in the world?
- Who is the worst person in football?
- And predictions for the top European leagues and anything else you wish to throw in there

I'd like to reveal the final survey on August 9 if we have a thread for the Community Shield and the opening weekend of the English lower leagues.

Hmmmm, let's see, I've been following football from the States since I was a wee one and had to go to the library in the pre-internet age to get scores from The Times from the week before.

Favorite Club:  Anyone w/ a Yank, b/c of accident of (my) birth.  Currently Everton (for years) b/c of Timmay.

Hated Club: AC Milan, Real Madrid, ManU.  Mostly a mild annoyance then hate.

Best Player: Even after the WC, Messi, although Robben & Kroos aren't far behind.

Worst: Torres, as for being overpaid, otherwise, vampiro de uruguay.

I suck at team predictions, but...BPL: Liverpool; La Liga:Real Madrid; Bundeliga: Bayern Munich; Serie A: Juventas; La Ligue: PSG.

Favorite: Real Madrid
Hate: Barcelona. Mourinho Chelsea is becoming a close second fast.
Best: Cristiano (yeah, yeah, Messi blah blah blah. I'm still going with my player)
Worst Person: Suarez due to temper, Pepe due to just flat-out stupidity and dirty play.
Predictions: Real for La Liga, Citeh repeat for the EPL, PSG in France, LOLBAYERNWINS for Bundesliga, Juve wins the Zombie Serie A.

For the record, it's nearly impossible to NOT score on that cross from that spot in front of the goal. Impressive bit of skill, I must say.

I'll take the official survey when you put it out, but:

- Arsenal
- Tottenham
- Messi
- Toss-up between John Terry and Luis Suarez. Terry is more of a prick, Suarez is more cheaty to get any advantage
- League winner predictions: Premier League: Chelsea. La Liga: Real Madrid. Bundesliga: Bayern Munich. Serie A: Roma

It's a bold prediction to make today. Taking the teams as they stand today, I think Chelsea better. Costa especially was a big pickup for them. Arsenal did very well with Sanchez is still working the transfer market, though, so another big pickup could tip the scales more in their favor.

I hate saying it. They are pretty close with depth. But ManCity getting whacked with sanctions and the stress of winning it last season, I dont see them winning. Plus Sergio's hamstrings are made of linguini.

Most Hated: Chelsea
Best Player In The World: Leo Messi, but cracks are appearing
Worst Person In Football: Sepp Blatter
Picks: Man City to retain, Real for La Liga, Bayern for the Bundesliga and CL, Bristol Rovers to avoid the Conference playoffs by either one point or 30

- Name your favorite football club in the world? Sparta Prague
- Which club do you hate the most? Slavia Prague, Banik Ostrava, Slovan Bratislava, Chelsea
- Who's the best player in the world? Robben, but he's an ass.
- Who is the worst person in football? Mourinho, Robben, Boateng, surprisingly not Suarez
- And predictions for the top European leagues and anything else you wish to throw in there You said top European leagues, so the Czech League will finish Sparta, Plzen, Dukla, and either Liberec or Jablonec. Everybody below City is strengthening. I think Arsenal will do much better than last year, and one more world-class signing might put them in contention. As of today, though, with Chelsea picking up Costa and Fabregas in addition to their team from last season, they're where they want to be. I don't know that City needs a ton of new world-class players because you already have quite a few, but I'd imagine it's still a concern. Even if Aguero does stay healthy.

I dont want top dollar signings....just quality depth behind our starters and to pick up minutes in CL and FA Cup. I just want to make sure when YaYa and Sergio are injured/cards we dont just eat 3-4 weeks worth of games.

Honestly, I don't think City really needs top dollar signings, so I agree with your strategy (and Sagna was a good pickup in that respect). Pellegrini's a good coach, so I think City will stay in that top four all season.

La Liga:  Real Madrid but another close race.

Forgot to add that even Bayern are one step ahead of even Real and Man Utd.:  Some of their board members are also board members at the various companies that sponsor the club.  IIRC Uli Hoeness was part of the Mercedes-Benz board before he went to the big house.

Favorite club: Ajax
Club I hate: Liverpool
Best player:  Can't answer that one so easy...GK - Neuer, Defender - Thiago Silva, Midfielder - Scholes (yes, I know he's retired, but he's been the best for a generation), Winger - Ronaldo, Forward - Messi, Striker - Lewandowski
Worst person in football - Suarez, by a mile

Predictions:
England - Chelsea, City, Arsenal, United (though I do believe that Arsenal have the talent to win the whole thing, and that Liverpool, Everton and Spurs will all challenge for the 4th spot, especially Everton if they're able to lock up Lukaku.  Also would not be shocked to see United as high as #2 if they're able to sign a Cavani, a CM and a CB).
Spain - Real, Barca, Atletico
Germany - Bayern, Dortmund, Leverkusen/Shalke
Netherlands - Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord
Italy -  Roma, Juventus, Napoli, Inter
France - PSG, Monaco, Lille

I started watching them when they were bought by the Shiekh. I remember reading about it here in the states while having rarely watched EPL. It just seemed crazy for a guy to just buy a team and stockpile it with no salary cap.  I started seeing their games online and took a liking to them. Meanwhile my soccer loving friends are all ManU fans telling congrats on liking a loser, it only grew my love of them more. In his defense, he has built up the homegrown players as well as buying what is needed. I do also root for the Yanks. As an American I want them to do well and carry that over to US Soccer. But if they face City...too bad Timmay...hope you get rocked.

2014-07-30 01:04:35 PM

MFAWG: Somebody explain to me in clear, short American English how the transfer fee works?

As no one has gone into much depth on this I will.

Most football leagues don't have a salary cap, some just have rules about how much you can spend vs turnover so unlike most of the US sports leagues they don't have to worry about salary cap space just how to pay the player.

Players are employees on fixed term contracts (often three to five years). If another club wants the player they will offer a package to the player and the players current club, mostly money, to voluntarily annul the current employment contract so the player is then free to sign an employment contract with the new club. This cash inducement to annul the employment contract is called the transfer fee with a percentage going to the player.

Sometimes a club will offer another player as well as cash, or add in other inducements like extra payments based on appearances for the new club or a percentage of any transfer fee if they sell on the player within a set number of years.

If alayer isn't currently under an employment contract with a club they can sign with any one they want. Actually firing a player is very rare as they are treated as an asset but can happen

- And predictions for the top European leagues and anything else you wish to throw in there

I'd like to reveal the final survey on August 9 if we have a thread for the Community Shield and the opening weekend of the English lower leagues.

Fave-ManCity and following Yanks overseas
Hated-ManU , Chelsea
Best Player- CR7
Worst Person- Bitey Suarez and Ashley Cole
Predictions- Bayern Munich, PSG, AC Milan, Real Madrid, and begrudgingly Aresenal

While we are at it, how the hell has Real Madrid avoided FFP sanctions with this silly season haul? Jesus is there any other player they want to buy for their front lines?

Only way I can see Real avoiding FFP, aside from their influence, is that they saved up a lot of money from the Galactico Era. Real has the biggest revenue stream of any club. At any rate, the only transfers left are exits I think. Di Maria is almost gone, with Khedira drawing heavy interest.

RumsfeldsReplacement: desertgeek: OK, I referenced this in the boring soccer thread for today but here's the news:

Shamelessly stealing (with permission) the great NFL Survey of Fandom from Di Atribe, I am creating a similar survey that is tentatively called the "Fark Association Football Fandom Survey."

In it, we will have questions such as:

- Name your favorite football club in the world?   Everton because Tim Howard (Yay Lukaku!!)
- Which club do you hate the most?   Italy.  Oh you said club.  Um, Italy.
- Who's the best player in the world?   Messi.  Everyone else just stop it.
- Who is the worst person in football?   Blatter, followed by the Qatari slave drivers
- And predictions for the top European leagues and anything else you wish to throw in there   Man U wins the EPL, David Moyes gets turned down by Leyton Orient, Liverpool crash and burn spectacularly in both EPL and Champion's League, Bayern and Real Madrid win their leagues, and I'm thinking we have a surprise Champion's League winner this year...maybe Roma (advantage to players who aren't tired from the World Cup)

I'd like to reveal the final survey on August 9 if we have a thread for the Community Shield and the opening weekend of the English lower leagues.

I doubt we'll have a surprise CL winner. Roma's highest finish was a runner-up in '83-84. Even Red Star Belgrade has a title. Unless you consider PSG a surprise.

Favorite: 1. FC Nürnberg
Hated: Anyone owned by sheiks, oligarchs or companies, plus VfB Stuttgart, AC Milan and Real Madrid
Best player: Right now I'd pick Ronaldo over Messi and Ibrahimovic. Also Neuer
Worst person: Blatter and his henchmen (btw one of 'em just kicked the bucket)
Predictions: No surprises, the usual suspects (Bayern, Real, Juventus, PSG etc.)

If Falcao hadn't gotten hurt prior to the World Cup, Rodriguez wouldn't have even been the best player on his own team, let alone in the world.  He was never the best player at Monaco, and won't be at Madrid.  Hell, Kroos is a better attacking midfielder than Rodriguez.

Maybe Torres should go to Man Utd.

No, seriously, work with me here. A big part of Torres' problem is that before he was injured, he had lightning speed and reflexes to go with his ball skills, and he has never learned to play without them. So who could teach him how to adjust? Ryan Giggs, that's who. A player who made the same transition himself as his speed faded.

Of course, they'd have to persuade Torres to become an attacking midfielder rather than an out-and-out goalscorer, but it could work.

But most of all, think how pissed off Liverpool fans would be if Torres succeeded in a Man Utd shirt.

That kind of thinking just yields you AC Milan playing Bubbly Ronaldo hoping he'd make a comeback and make Inter jealous.

So I just watched Liverpool play Man City at Yankee Stadium as part of that Champions Cup thing. A couple of thoughts:

- I feel for whomever ends up playing for NYCFC when they start playing because the field was shiat. Players were slipping all over the place.

- Liverpool still needs to work on defense but they were able to fight back from behind twice so that's a bit of a positive, despite it coming against a few Citeh B-team players.

- FOX still sucks at showing soccer. Even though they had a good announce crew, everything else about it was poor.

You make that sound like a bad thing?
