I had some well-known student athletes in my class. They could get tutoring because they were always away at basketball games (University of Arizona). Our professors never gave them a break. A couple of my Spanish professors were brutal. "If you can't handle the courses, you need to change your major."

Those student-athletes worked their butts off to get their degrees. Maybe it's different in other schools.

Because taking it easy your last semester when you've met all the requirements for graduation except a few electives is something that is limited to football players, right? The guy has done everything he needs to graduate and is sticking around an extra semester while taking some jerkoff classes. I don't see the problem here.

my favorite website McPageviews, here! Further down the page we'll mention that Mariota already graduated and your manufactured outrage is still entirely manufactured.

Who's supposed to get outraged about this, exactly? ACC and Big Ten types?

I underloaded my last semester as well - History of Sea Power and Archery, a whopping 4 credit hours. It's not that uncommon.

Correct.  Nothing wrong with this situation.

I had a semester that consisted of two real classes plus billiards and skiing and no classes on Friday.

That is the latest filter it seems.  Quite a few have been caught in that web recently.

I was one of those bastard "NCAA Student Athletes" and my last semester consisted of a 6 credit hour SCUBA diving class because I needed a Health and Physical Education class, and it was better than Basic PE or the like.  Also, it met Monday's from 10 am to 4 pm, which was the only day we didn't have practice and our weight session was at 7:30 am.

God forbid Mariota take fun classes to finish up his degree.  He's not some freshman taking Intro to Basket Making or something like that.

I had two starting USF basketball players in one of my classes. One of them did decent work, the other went over and above, volunteering for group projects, et cetera. Their coach emailed me regularly to see how they were doing, what their attendance was, et cetera.

Academics can be really bad at major universities, but the basketball program at USF was pretty on the ball with things when I was there.

I remember reading a gushing story about Jabari Parker at Duke, one of the courses he was taking was about the films of Spike Lee. It was obvious he was only going to be there for a year, at one of the best schools in the world, and he takes a class on watching bad movies.

No wonder most of these guys end up broke.

If I remember correctly Christian Ponder was pretty much done with classes before his junior year started and was working on a second masters by the time he was a senior.  So it's not uncommon to have little curriculum to do in a senior year if you set yourself up correctly.

I made a point of taking one or two of these one-hour phys. ed. courses every quarter when I was at OSU, just to have a change of pace from my engineering program.  They didn't actually count towards your degree unless you were in the college of education, and only then if you were in a Phys. Ed teaching program, but since tuition was flat-rate once you had enough hours to be considered full-time, I figured why not throw in a gratishour or two of something fun and physical?

Same at UCF. I can attest for the football and basketball players as being generally bright and we'll behaved kids. Perhaps that's why both our teams suck historically? Oleary won't recruit some shiat head no matter how good they are. He famously walked out of a 4 star recruits home when the kid was an asshole to his mom.
